Looking for more revs
« on: October 31, 2006, 07:33:11 AM »
I have a big "rolling out" problem especially when it comes to fresh oiled lanes...I usually stand on the 20 board then work my way right if Im still "rolling out"...I wouldn't even say that I have to much ball speed @ 14mph but I looking for more revs from my release and I really don't wanna go out there with a glove, unless it would really help me out...Any suggestions, thanks Joe

Try tucking your pinky finger in. Cup the wrist a little more. Come through the ball with a more exaggerated follow-through and lift through the ball with your fingers, rather than suit-casing it down the lane.

It's hard to say what to try without seeing you bowl, but those should help to try out.

The last thing you want with roll out is more revs.  If you speed is only 14mhp, I'm guess you revs are touch much for your speed.  In todays game, you need to match your speed to your revs.  If anything, I'd work on uping your speed a mph or two.

For starters:

Back up on the approach about 8", start the ball SLIGHTLY higher in your setup

Roll out could also be the surface of the ball, with 14lb I can't imagine you throwing much of anything sanded.....

I've never tried one. I have an Ebonite tacky glove that I only pull out when I need a very small amount of extra rev's. It's a fine-tuning option to my shot.

I agree with the tucking problem, though. I've tried it and I lose stability, causing the ball to have potential to wobble a bit left and right in the back-swing. I have a fairly thin wrist and arm though. By spreading my pinky and index out wider, I get nice stability and a consistent roll.

I can tween or crank the shot, but I prefer not to crank it. When I do, I stay under the ball more and scoop it onto the lane, so to speak. Like scooping water from a well with your hand cupped and splashing your face with it. If that helps..

Ask a coach about your swing, I feel that i get more revs when i have a higher backswing than my normal one.

Are you sure your ball is rolling out?  If so, I agree with agroves.  Try a little polish?

maybe i got the whole "rolling out" term wrong...let me explain what I see happening...after i release the ball it starts its arc then flats out and just goes straight into the 3 and 4 pin pocket...I stand on the middle dot and throw out to about the 10 board from the right...and like i was saying it would arc back and just flat out and roll straight into the 3 and 4 pins...and I am using a black widow on a freshly oiled lane...which i do great with any time else beside fresh oil...thanks Joe

Worst reply ever....ignore this reply....

Polish the black widow, in box condition with 14mph I imagine it is burning up.

USAF...if you want more revs, what I work on, is making sure that my wrist beings the motion a little earlier in the swing, then just pull through having your fingers rotate around the ball...but be careful, on drier lanes, this will create more roll out....to battle the roll out, take a weaker ball and just play the same release and line you have been...then adjust from there.

So my problem has nothing to do with Revs...but more with the ball having to much friction due to the lack of oil and the type of ball...I appreciate everyone helping me out...would of never known

Andrew, what do you mean when you say that "its burning up?" You suggest it get the black widow polished?

lorok...thank you for the great reply and explaination, i'll make sure i'll give it a try, but it usually happens on freshly oiled lanes

Burning up is when the cover is sanded too aggressive for the lane condition.  It is the most likely cause of "roll out".  The ball bleeds energy too quickly.

USAF,
Agroves had it right if you got your bowler Magazine from USBC it talks about who nees  a sanded ball and who needs a polished ball and you fit the need of a polished ball so it stores it energy for later down the lanes.
