Do you hate this question?
« on: October 16, 2006, 06:44:42 PM »
How many honor scores do you have?  We picked up a guy as a sub tonight.  He asked me this question, to which I replied "a couple".  Does it really matter?  I wonder, would he think less of me as a bowler if I had none?

If the question is among friends, then thats fine, but from someone you don't know, what is the purpose?

I've never been asked that question. One of my teammates this year (new to our team) felt bad when I shot my first 300 last month because he figured based on my 30 years+ of bowling that I had at least a couple of 300's.

I tend to downplay honor scores if asked about them, I prefer to watch people bowl and let them talk about their games rather than talking about my own game.

I anit said $h1t in this post but yet you have to be an @$$h0le, try to be funny and bring me up in it ?

Honor Scores in the modern game are primarily a game of the where, how, what, and the many.  You have to be on a scorable condition, the block of games (3,4,6, or 8.. 3-4-5 man team, or singles), equipment and game correlation, and of course... the biggy how often to you bowl (once a week, 2, 3, 4, 5; or tournament play every week, once a month). Honors could grow exponentially if all these X factors are in place.

When I see people with ten's, and hundred's of these honor awards, rest assured that talent and many hours of time has been invested in their achievement.

Heck, I'm plenty happy just with a few awards, practice twice a week, once a week league, a tournament or two.  It's an honor to just bowl.  What a great game. I would not be insulted with the question though, if asked, I would certainly give a mouthful of rightful education depending on the delivery based on the intuitive intent of the questioner.

My favorite response to the above question or to someone who asks what your average is: "I've been known to break 100..."

If asked this question the one thing I can guarantee is that I'll give you a smart a## answer.  "how many would you like?", "How many ya got?", "More than I need". etc.

The last time someone asked me that question, I looked at him with a quizzical look on my face and asked him, "What's an honor score?".  He walked away shaking his head.
