Match Play Strategy
« on: July 09, 2007, 03:16:59 AM »
I've made the match play finals in three of the last four ABT tourneys I've entered.  The problem is, I've gotten my butt handed to me in the first match each time.  (Rick Wunder can attest to this, he saw me get throttled yesterday!)  I don't have a whole lot of experience in match play, and I am learning something with each loss.  One key I've learned so far is that I shouldn't be "married" to the line that got me there in the first place.  I think my biggest weakness has been trying to stick with that line even when it isn't working very well.  I intend to be more open to making big moves if necessary.  Also, I was a lot less nervous in yesterday's match and actually delivered the ball quite well, IMO, I just got some bad breaks and was playing the wrong line.  Are there any specific tips you might have for success in match play?

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

That sounds like good advice.  In retrospect, I think I watch far too many of my opponents shots.  Intellectually I know that I just need to execute and not worry about what he's doing, but if I see  him throw it through the nose repeatedly for strikes, maybe it gets to me.    I'll have to try not to watch my opponent next time.

I think we have covered the bases on this one... I disgree with one thing though. Staying married to a shot because allot of times the shots changes and you might need to change your entry angle to hit your sweet spot..

Takes some deep breaths and let it do what it do...

As usual, Bones is right on the money.  I would like to elaborate on one aspect of his reply:
BELIEVE that no matter how the match begins, it isn't over until it's over.  If your opponent starts out stringing strikes, focus on your shot making and BELIEVE he is going to eventually miss (they almost always do), and when that happens you need to be in a position to take the advantage.  Also, if you start out with a big lead, again focus on shot making, believing that if you let your opponent back in the match, he will take the advantage.
In my opinion, the challenge to match play is to believe in yourself and your ability to maintaining focus and concentration on what you need to do to post the highest score possible, ignoring on how well the opposition is doing.
When the match is over, someone will tell you if you won or lost.
Best of luck in your future matches.
