'Lifter' Inserts
« on: October 11, 2009, 11:10:14 AM »
Do the inserts with a lip actually make much difference to the release and roll of the ball, or is it really just a comfort thing / mental thing for the bowlers who use them? I understand they have a slight alteration of pitch in the fingers as a result of the lip, but is that any different to putting additional pitch on the finger holes?

Well, I have 3/8 Away ( reverse ) in my fingers and normally just use the oval side of the grip. I was curious my self and fliped them over now using the pitch side... what that has done is increase my span length and changed my pitches to 1/4 away. I personally like the change.

It may be a little of both. Comfort and release. I only use Vise lift grips in all of my balls. Even my spare ball has them. I used oval inserts in a few balls and I can see a difference in the way my balls roll.

Lift grips are useful for players who cannot bend their first finger joint well, and would have pitch problems with a normal insert. For them, these "ramps" give the hold they need, especially when releasing the ball. For them, it adds some revs, and also holding comfort.

But I would not recommend this solution for everyone - I'd consult a pro shop about it, just to prevent injuries from overstressing. You'd paobably also have to change span and probably finger pitch a bit to make effective use of lift inserts if you want to switch.
