Looking for your opinions
« on: January 29, 2009, 01:21:58 PM »
I'm considering dropping out of a league to bowl in another that on the same night.

I"m in a league right now 4 man teams bowling with 2 friends and someone else that I don't know too well, and i'm freaking miserable there. I've been throwing the ball terrible there, and not really having any fun(probably bowling bad BECAUSE i'm not having fun). The league as lost a TON of good quality teams and i'm stuck with a lot of people that I don't know or want to know, so i'm pretty much stuck talking to my team and who ever drops by that night. But, we're in the top 2 or 3 with a good chance to win, even with my bad bowling and losing my point and costing us games every week. But the league has only 13 or 14 teams at this point so I would be surprised if it was $1,500 a man.

The league I want to join is PBA Trios on the same night, my buddy just lost one of his teammates 2 weeks into the new season. It's a small league about 8 teams but it's a PBA league and it's sport sanctioned, and those are the leagues I really enjoy bowling.

I really need some help here, we still have a long way to go in the season (week 19 of 36) I don't really care much about the money I'd be losing by pulling out of the league, I'm a little worried about pissing off my friend(not that we're really great friends anyway) Is it a douchebag thing to do? Should I stop being a woman and just finish the league out, or should I go where I'm gonna have the most fun, a league where i'll have a lot of friends and where i'll enjoy bowling wether I'm bowling good or bad?

Joe,

You made a committment. Yes, it would be fun and a "teenager" type of reaction to drop the people to whom you made a committment.

Let's put the shoe on the other foot.
If it were you who was being left, and your not so great friend told, "I'm leaving because you're not as much fun as I thought you'd be", how would you feel?

Be old fashioned. Honor the committment you made.

Join the PBA league next year. It's not going away.

1. Say you have something more important (like work) to do on that night...drop the league.

2. Find them a new bowler...after a couple weeks, tell them that you don't want to remove the new bowler, as he's having a lot of fun, but that your "work" committment went away.

3. Join the PBA League.

Nobodies feelings get hurt. you're bowling the league you want, they're having fun, and you just got them someone new who's having more fun than you would've been anyway.

The season is half over, finish it out and don't come back next year.  If you have to quit, find a replacement, you owe it to your friends.  Also, buy them a round or two of drinks your final night.

Following the 3 steps listed above would definitely make it a "douchebag move". Yes, a work commitment going away after two weeks wouldn't look sketchy at all.. Ummmm...

Here's another vote for finishing out the season with the team you're on.

Finish the league...you made a commitment to the team and leaving because you aren't having a good time is a very juvenille thing to do.

Inform them that you aren't coming back next year and they will have to find another bowler for next season.

I've thought about quitting a couple of leagues the last couple of years because I was bowling so terribly.  One was a summer league with my sister as a partner and the other is a 36 week mens league and I am friends with all the guys on the team, one of whom is my father.  Couple of times I came close to quitting.  Never could bring myself to do it...I'd hate to leave my teams in that position and I would lose so much self respect for myself....and others would lose respect for me.

Just keep plugging along....both the times that I wanted to quit I ended up turning it around and bowling decently.  In my summer league I bowled the first 8 weeks at around a 185 average.  Couldn't seem to bowl my way out of a wet paper bag and it was getting frustrating.  After that I told myself that I was gonna work on a couple things and try to have fun.  The last 8 weeks of the league I averaged almost 230...with 3 nights that I shot 660+ with a 170 first game.
