axis rotation/tilt
« on: October 17, 2011, 03:38:16 AM »
O.K. I am a 61 y.o. lefty. I have been bowling for, well lets say, more than 39 years. I have been on the PBA tour( found out how good I WASN"T. My question, I have been told my axis tilt is anywhere from 45 to 90 degrees. more to the upper side. Can anyone tell me a good way to keep under the ball to have 0 to 45 degrees tilt? I realize its muscle memory. I have been told a good way to check, if you do not have video is place a piece of tape under the finger holes and watch the rotation. I am a 210+ avg. on most shots. I suffer as you might expect, on long oil(Nationals shot).  I have a 5 3/16 span, 1/8th reverse on the thumb with 1/4 left. 3/8th reverse on fingers. I have no problem coming out of the ball, no sores or trouble. I have been told that I may need to change the pitch on my thumb from left to right. That lets you out of the ball sooner? and causes u to stay under the ball longer. Sorry for the lengthy note. But I am still very competitive and compete frequently. Thanks for the great site.

I believe....you are confusing tilt with axis rotation.  These should help.

thanks for the reply scotts33. That helps explain everything. Guess your right it is the rotation I am interested in. My is usually 90 degrees or about there. Question, I know it takes practice to acheive this. Can span or pitches prevent me from doing this without difficulty? I know in the past when I try to pull my pinky in or index in, it feels really funny. Is that because of span and pitch or just something that takes time t;o get used to ? I know this will take time but that is a great article and I turely appreciate your advice. I haven't read the other article but will let you know. Oh, does axis tilt need to be addressed or does that change with rotation?

Thank you for linking the BTM article, Scott, very god literature. And also a consolation since it exactly describes my "game symptoms" - had a terrible league weekend, and here's a good explanation why I did not fare well...

No problem Thomas.  Our release maladies our covered up by the majority of us that bowl on easier league conditions and unmasked on harder flatter conditions.

I would think that is a large issue for a lefty with lots of axis rotation that can not control backends....I see this numerous times on a THS with rev dominant lefties.  We don't see this as much on the right side as the head oil depletion and slight carry down mellows out ball reaction for the most part on the right side on a house condition.  This is generalizing though.

believe your correct Scott, Our travel league weekend was terrible for all. Left and right. The left side I was on the ball return. I tried what you listed in last post. It REALLY works. Of course it will take practice to get comfortable with. It feels odd and I didn't know if that was due to maybe a span problem or if it just takes getting used to. You have a comment on that?
