Looks like it may be bye-bye bowling
« on: September 20, 2008, 02:26:12 PM »
I have toyed with the idea of giving it all up, but planned to just cut back to 2 leagues and see what happens.  I thought I was bowling Mondays & Wednesdays.

Monday is a sport league and they thought they had 20 teams, one of them I was on.  A week ago Monday it started.  I was the only one on my team to show up.  Phone calls are made and it turns out one of the bowlers "forgot" his current Monday league didn't end until November   The other bowler is his friend and decides he is not bowling.  So I am left with 2 blinds.  To complicate things two other bowlers on 2 different teams become no shows and one no one can find a valid phone number for one.  Another bowler decides to quit so we are short 5 bowlers.

I get my daughter to bowl last week.  They take the other solo bowler and fill the team that has the bowler no one can get a hold of.  My daughter's job prevents her from making the 36 week commitment, even with my paying the spot.  They also made it very clear they are not going to carry a blind team the whole season.  So despite being in the league 5 years, it is looking like I am squeezed out.  The only opening is with 2 very low average bowlers and we would not be competitive in any way and at $30/week I would be insane to take the spot.  I have already put out $210 (3 weeks for my daughter and 4 for me)plus sport upgrade.

Wednesday I have a team, but I'm not sure how many weeks I can go before I kill one of my teammates.  One just never stops talking, mainly whining about how every shot he tosses should be a strike and he was ripped off.  The other likes to talk down to me like I am an idiot, then complain behind my back about my bowling.  The final bowler is a notorious sandbagger.  I may make it through the season, but it is going to be the longest 36 week week league I have bowled.

So if I am not around much, not that I post ridiculously often, it is because either:

1) I am not bowling
2) I did kill one of my teammates
3) I had to be put in an institution due to fighting the urge to choke the crap out of one of my teammates

Be well & Bowl Well!

I feel your pain. Me, and my wife were in a similar situation with team members. Finally we just left, and went to a different league in a whole different bowling alley, now its much better, and happier. Hang in there, and don't give up on something you love to do.

i hear where you're coming from, maybe try to find a different league and start out as a sub, or go to a different house and see what's up there. you could even take a year off, collect your thoughts and give it another go

The problem is I hate 5 person teams in league, the pace is just too slow.  I have been bowling doules, trios or 4s for the past 4 or so years.  The only non 5 person leagues I know of in the Wed. center are the one I'm in, Sunday (I bowled it quite a few years, but too many bowlers who flake)and Thursday (high scratch and I wouldn't be picked up, I'm not good enough for them).  The Monday center doesn't have a whole lot to choose from at all.  There are other centers, but I don't know what they have to offer that is not a 5 person team.

I think the IPod will be getting a work out if I am to make it the whole season  On the positive of not bowing the Sport league it is $30 a week I won't be spending and about 30 miles less a week I'll be traveling.

Bowling IS supposed to be fun ....

I've been in your position before. Thankfully, they didn't turn out nearly as bad as yours sounds. I'd give my 2 week notice on the Sport league, cut your increasing loses and count your blessings.

I've never had people who just abandoned the team after making the commitment. I'd tend to get very mad at such a person. If they were a friend, they wouldn't be shortly thereafter. With some people having a cell phone EMBEDDED in their ear canal, is it so hard to make one phone call?

Suggestions:
Find some other houses. Notice the plural. Sacrifice one year and find some 3 or 4 person leagues that need subs or have vacancies. Many houses post lists of leagues and teams that need bowlers. Make some new, real bowling friends (as opposed to those other teammates who seem not to care about you at all).

Do the basics all over as if you were returning to bowling after a hiatus: contact the secretary of leagues that look interesting and ask if there are vacancies or if you can sub or even join a roster of a team that needs a sub. (Different leagues have different substitute rules.)

These days there are many leagues losing teams and people. I see that all around here: 20 and 24 team leagues are down to 12 and 16 team leagues with many teams having vacancies.

Good luck.

Gee, TP, when I read your title, I thought perhaps your knee had finally totally failed or something. Glad to read it wasn't that, just the usual situation of people who cannot keep a committment.

Keep looking!

Thanks for the replies.  I am going to either look at other centers or just use the money I save by not bowling the Monday league to get in some extra practice.

The knee is actually feeling pretty good, not 100%, but definitely better than it has been in a long while.  The positive is this is after 2 1/2 weeks back in the classroom and on my feet all day.

What bothers me the most is the sport league, it is friends who run the league and set up the situation with my team.  In their defense, they thought the two were in for sure.  As of a day or so before the 1st night both were phoned and said they were going to be there.  It just feels like everyone else was taken care of and I was left hung out to dry.

Wednesday, some are taking bets as to how long I'll last.  I'll have to make tham all lose and stick it out

Remember the words of Bones, "Life's to short if you don't like the way things are going and not enjoying what your doing". But first I would politely tell my teammates to keep their traps shut!

Wow, that really sucks.  I hope you can work something out.

I can't even remember the last time I had a consistent team myself.  I'm only in one area for a few years before I have to start all over again, and get the "who the hell is this guy?"  thing again.  Really sucks.  Can't wait for retirement.

I know the feeling and i dont blame you on your monday league at that cost it becomes almost no fun. With a team mate you want to choke i understand that also, that also can make it for a long season. remember if you choke him/her use a nice silk thong it will look nicer. good luck!

First I have to say I am the originator of this topic.  My computer crashed and I am using an older one.  I forgot my pasword and requested it be sent to me.  I also forgot I set it up with an email account I don't often check and it was deactivated, so for now TP is deactivated until the powers that be respond to my email with the current, active email address.  This was my original user name. I modified the user name from CB just incase I can't reactivate my account.

LOL I'll keep that in mind.

An update on Monday, as of now I dropped the league.  One of the guys on the team we were supposed to bowl got upset they were bowling a blind team and as resigned.  Two other guys found out they will be needing surgery and will be out for the season.  So not only did my quitting drop the league from 20 to 18, but in reality they may be down to 16 by next week.  It still looks like I am out.

Ice Storm, sorry to hear about the loss of the job.  I may have been edged out of a league, but I am fortunate to have my job.  It puts things in perspective.  I wish you luck finding a new job, maybe a better job?
