Lost weight, bowling like poo
« on: August 21, 2015, 01:21:22 PM »
Ive lost 25 lbs in the last two months and my bowling has declined steadily during that time frame. Does it make sense that my hand could have "lost weight" I use Vacu Grips so the fingers are fine. Its the thumb that I think may the issue. I believe Ive begun squeezing, leading to pulling the swing down very aggressively, leading to lost balance, leading to throwing balls all over the place. Does this make sense?

Anyway, I've taped my thumb up tighter with tape in the back and now I can post shots better and not pull down as much. Can weight loss cause all this?

It's possible that it's affected it, I lost a shoe size when I lost 50 or so pounds a number of years ago. I'd go to your local shop and get your grip checked out, could be a matter of your much freer with less weight and it's affecting your motion to the line.

No doubt losing weight can also affect your fingers and in bowling lead to big issues if not resized.

My wife has lost weight over the years and resized her rings a few times.

If you are grabbing to hold on to the ball,  or the oppisite and having problems getting out that would easily cause big release issues,  into timing issues,  into confidence issues.
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

Congrats on your weight loss.

YES, you'll need to change the size of your thumb hole unless you're different than most.  I see it very frequently in those bowlers who lose weight.

Strange, one time I lost weight I bowled much better. I took a fee weeks as my timing was off, maybe it's your timing NF...you are feeling much lighter on your feet I bet.

Good point. I got the yips where I literally could not let the ball go. I've gone from 234 to 210 average wise. Weight wise from 210 to 184.

When I ran my pro shop, I was almost 300 pounds and had a size 48 waist. I set out 3 years ago to change and have lost (without surgery) 120 pounds and now weight 180 and am down to a size 34 waist. My hand has shrank and my bowling has suffered because my mechanics are different. I had to swing the ball out and around my hips before, now I don't. I still find myself wanting to swing it around and my arm swing gets all out of whack. My hands shrank and had to steadily adjust my span, and pitches along with the hole sizes.

Many things change. All the best to you.

Lost weight in the past 3 months noticed the other day that my backswing has returned timing still not what it use to be but that an work in progress hadn't bowled 700 in a while shot 748 other day (255-215-278) thumb down from 1" to 31/32 but finger holes I have to place tape in back of inserts.

Also depends on how you lost weight.  Through diet and exercise versus just eating a little less.

From experience, diet and exercise affected my bowling more than anything.  But I did need to replace my thumb slug to get a more accurate fit along with a different pitch.  Adding tape can get you close but starting over will be the best.  Also check your stats now that you have changed.  You may be throwing the ball differently.

Congrats on the weight loss.  If you have more weight to go, you may want to determine when to get refit since you will have to do it again after reaching your goal.
