The Ultimate Adjustment: The Straight Ball
« on: April 15, 2005, 11:24:30 AM »
Went to bowl ahead today for league since I'm bowling state tomorrow, got the card problem taken care of so thanks everyone for that(wish me luck out there!) but I realize I am still a house hack like I figured, threw a horrid 533, 6 opens, moved up,left, back, right, tucked my pinky in, switched balls twice, well yea I had nothing. Afterwards I felt horrible about myself, and decided to bowl 3 more on the same pair. Next game, 189, still nothing and was starting to realize just how much I suck. I mean 4 games and still no line!?!? So I decided to take my hex out and just throw the heat at the 1-3 like Jaros did for his major win............257......felt like chopping my hand off as punishment for being STUPID. Why is it that when we hit the lanes where nothing works instead of moving across the state and back on the approach and trying every hand position in the book why don't we just go straight for the target. I realize this won't work when the ball won't hold at all but seriously, I was amazed that I didn't do it considering I threw 656 last week doing the same exact thing. Works at my home house sometimes to with a little less carry. I know what I've discovered, if you can't find it, give em' the heater. Straighter IS Greater.

Although it is more fun to see the balls cross lanes, I've had a lot more success going straight. Yesterday, as a matter of fact, took my V2 Sanded for a spin, and instead of using my UI trying to hook the lane, played straight up 3rd arrow. Well what do you know, started with a 214 which ended with 4 strikes in a row and then the next game I had the front 9! I had 13 strikes in a row. First time ever. The ball just skidded and then just hooked about 2-4inches max. Definately recommend throwing straight.

Hex - there is some truth to "straighter is greater".  The fewer boards you cross, the more you take lane conditions out of play.  That's why bowlers who take a more direct approach tend to score higher (in general) when the lane conditions are very tough.

I rolled my high game ever (unsanctioned) during extreme bowling when the lanes were TRASHED. I threw it as hard as I could, right at the pocket, and ended with a 266!

two years ago I was in the worst slump of my life (playing coast to coast).  As a last resort I went to week equipment and played straight.  Since then, I've seen my average increase by about 20 pins.  It is true.... straighter is greater.
