Low price point arsenal
« on: May 26, 2008, 03:53:51 AM »
With two kids in college the last few years, I haven't thought much about building up a nice shiny new arsenal. The only ball I've bought lately is the Storm Jolt Pearl. Other than that, everything else is at least 4 years old.
So now I want to re-build my arsenal, but with a tight budget, I'm trying to stick to low-priced stuff. I'm a tweener, mediums revs, 15-16 mph.

Look at Visionary's Ogre Line. Great Performance from low prices.

Roto's planet line is great when you looking for bang for the buck.

Depending on what balls you have now, maybe a hot water bath and a surface refresh is all you need. If you buy a spinner off EBay instead of a new ball you could probably change the surfaces on your old stuff to fit todays conditions. What kind of stuff do you have now?

Roto-Grip's Planet line, Visionary's Ogre line and Hammer's Vibe balls are probably THE major values for your dollar today in bowling balls.

What type of ball do you need/want now?

The Ogre Pearl and the RG Venus are probably a step up from the Jolt Pearl.
The RG Pluto/Saturn is another step up. The Ogre solid is a step above those.

I will have to agree with the consensus here.  You haven't set a price point per ball or for the entire arsenal, so it's a little hard to piece together something that would fit within the specified frame.  If you're talking biggest bang for your buck though, I would agree with what was written above, to include:

Roto Cell - This is a super high performer, but can be acquired at a "mid ball price"

Hammer Raw Anger - this ball is an absolute steal for the price.  I know people who pull this ball out as their benchmark even over the higher priced widow series

Any mid priced visionary ball - the Ogres are decent, but so are the AMB's.  Great reaction, durability, and hit.

Lanemasters sure strike - although not a two-piece ball like the legends line, this has had solid reviews across the board at a fraction of the legends price.

Good luck with the hunt!

Why do you need an arsenal? Do you  bowl multiple houses, are you a traveling tournament bowler, are you trying to make a living bowling?  I see a lot of one house hacks 9 (not saying you are)carry 6 balls and don't have a clue about tight shots, burnt heads, carry down,  roll out, and clean backends,   all of which are very confusing let alone understandig what each balls reaction is.  If the lanes are tight square up and if they hook swing it, with some practice that is all the average one house joe needs to know.  Save your money and purchase one ball a year and consider what you already have and how it reacts and you will eventually wind up with a very good arsenal that you are very aware of each balls reaction. By only buying one ech year you can buy the high end stuff if you think it is needed.

I have done my best bowling with just one ball, way before I ever discovered this Ballreviews site.  I think the average joe on this forum is thinking way too much, which ball, which surface, which span is best, what pitch works best, should you use low rg, or high, low or high differential.  Maybe, assymetrical is better than symetrical. I regularly see bowlers with 20 year old balls, shoot tremendous scores.  This site is full of useful knowledge but I think overload can often apply here for most of us.

Remember it is just a game, a night out, have some fun.   Keep it simple is the best way to enjoy this game.  Advice, I wish I had followed for the 40 years I have been bowling.
