Where would you start?
« on: February 07, 2005, 09:34:19 AM »
I know a guy who is looking for a new ball.  Here is why I am asking you for help.  His current ball is about 3 years old.  He's made a comment already about "I don't know what to get.  You read all those little ads in the catalog and they don't really tell you nothin'".

Keep in mind, this guy is not up to date on technical data, modern coverstocks, or even what balls are new or old releases.  He shows up once a week, bowls his games, and takes his 190 avg and goes home.

How would you guide him that would help him make an informed decision, rather than just letting him go at the whim of the pro shop guy?  I'm not sure how receptive he would be towards reading up on core dynamics and drilling layouts.

I'd ask him what HE expects out of a new ball. Does he need a reactive or particle ?. Try to get something close to what he has now, seems to be working for him, in his own way, and give him a list of balls that MIGHT work for him.

my 2 cents are up

Take in to account a few things. First off, what type of oil you guys are bowling on. Second, ask him what type of reaction he wants. Third, take in to account his style. Base your suggestion off that. That is the best thing I can think of, for someone who doesnt know a lot about it. Or you could go with the other comment, and actually take the time to help him learn if he is willing to.

Thanks for the help guys!  I think I'll go with ta 152's suggestion and make a little informative chart.  The guy's not stupid, he just doesn't take the game quite as seriously as some of us here do.  I think a little info that will guide him the right direction, yet will let him make his own decision is probably a good way to go.
