Why make the thumb so tight?
« on: March 24, 2004, 12:20:53 AM »
I was watching my US Open tape last night and they were talking about PDWs thumb pain from all the callouses, etc.  Why would you make the thumb so tight?  I've had mine drilled out some since I started using Ron C's Magic Carpet and I love the release I'm getting.  I can put my thumb all the way in the hole, but I'm not sticking on the way out like I used to.  If I put my fingers in the ball and just hold it at my side, the ball stays put with no grip pressure.  Does it need to be tighter than that?  I've been bowling about 10 games a week since November and I don't have any callouses yet.  Maybe I just need to bowl some more!!

they bowl a lot games. I have heard between 50 to 100 a week. try that then see how your thumb is.

then try if for 20 years.

How many games a week does he bowl???
The thumbhole may not be horribly tight - the span may be stretched, or the pitches a little "different" than the build of his hand might indicate - causing friction and callous buildup.
You bowl 10 a week - he probably bowls 150.
If Pete and I have anything in common, that "tight" fit helps control loft and release timing. If you get out of the ball too soon, it can really mess up your day.

I understand that they bowl WAY more games than I ever will, I just don't see why you'd want a super tight thumb hole -- I would think the smoother out of the ball you are, the better results you'll get.  The best way to do that would be to make the thumb just tight enough so you don't have to squeeze -- the Magic Carpet is nice because it makes my thumb tighter, but I'm generally not touching the slug.  For some reason I really seem to stick to the slug...

I believe that many of the pros like a tight thumb (and sharper holes) than amateurs to keep them from grabbing the ball.

From Ron's tips:

The first step in learning this release is at the very beginning, with your grip on the ball. To have a good, clean, consistent release, it’s imperative that you don’t squeeze the ball in your stance. The holes in the ball are called “gripping holes” and that is the worst thing we could have ever called them. You need to hold the ball like you are holding a baby bird or an egg in your hand. If your ball fits properly you should not have to squeeze the ball anywhere in the swing or during the release. If the ball wants to slide off of your thumb, unless you squeeze it, then add tape or Ron C’s Magic Carpet to the hole to snug it up.  If your thumb wants to slide out no matter how tight you make your thumb, then have your pro shop check your pitches. You may have too much reverse pitch or some other improper fit. Remember, if you squeeze the ball, you have to subconsciously tell yourself to let go. There is no way you are going to be able to do that the same every time. The more pressure on you to make a good shot the more likely you are going to hang on to the ball too long.

Norm Duke leaves the edges of his holes exactly like they come out of the drill press, or in other words very sharp. Ditto on his finger holes. I don't round (bevel) mine off as much as most people do, and I don't leave as sharp as Norm Duke. I just barely take away the sharp edge on my holes. I guess a person would say that I square up the edges. (Hard to explain this) Most people don't like my balls because of the more square edges of the thumb holes.
