Who is with me when I say I don't care what the pros use?
« on: February 10, 2004, 06:41:45 AM »
To be honest I am kind of sick of everyone trying to find out what the pros use and then thinking that if they got the same equiptment their average would jump 20 pins.  I have seen like 5 posts asking for a NIB Nighthawk because they thought that was what Voss was using.  For one, the ball is like 5 years old and two, there isn't THAT much of a difference in bowling balls anymore.  Sure you have a few different coverstocks and surfaces but you still have to execute, the ball won't do it for you.  Yeah I like to know what the pros use, just out of curiousity, but I'm not going to go run out and buy something like it's going out of style.

Okay I kind of sounded like I was contradicting myself there after the subject... what I meant was I don't care enough to think buying something different will magically make me a better bowler lol.

I would somewhat agree that a certain pro may influence someone in sticking with a certain line of balls, shoes, etc. But to go out and look for a 5 year old ball, or even spend 150 on a new ball because Webber won the Open with it is a little stupid IMHO.

I use what works for me. I could care less what the Pro's use. In the old days, I watched what they were using because most were Tweeners or Strokers and threw down and in or in that area, so I could relate to them when choosing balls for myself. However, nowdays with all of the Crankers and High Revvers, I can't relate to them to benefit me as I can't even begin to throw like that, so I pay no attention to what they throw.

Knowing what the PRO's are using is NO DIFFERENT then looking at a BALL REVIEW .. I try to find out every week what each PRO used while bowling on TV! I might even use what I see (after knowing what the ball is) to assist me in purchasing a ball ..

Yeah, especially when STORM touts Weber as winning with a XXX so everyone will want to buy one when he was really using an X-Factor on TV. I don't think I could be Tiger if I used his clubs, either.

I would, however, be much better if I bowled with dark sunglasses - does anyone know what type PDW wore??????????????????????

Good point Oz.  The only way I would care, is if I saw a guy using an artifact, like when Brett Wolfe won the Masters with a Blue Hammer.  As far as whether a ball is 5 years old or not, so what.  I bowl better with the older, "simpler" balls of 5 years ago rather than balls of today.  I average 230 every year since 1996 and most of that was with balls such as Triton Heat, Triton Elite Pearl, Green Gargoyle (had for almost 3 years), Black Panther, etc....I have many a bowler say that they pull a ball out of the closet only to shoot a ton with it.  About 75% of today's bowlers feel the next release is the ball to get them over the hump.  If you have a weak release, I can see that.  But, for those who are tweeners and crankers, unless you are on an absolute flood, older is better.  Anyone have my back on this?

I'm backing you - that's why I posted a want ad for a Shore-D.

The only offer so far is to scrape one off the floor of someone's shop.........

In all seriousness, I read a lot about coverstock death, I just keep rolling 'em and refinishing it until it slips through the ring

I like to see what the pros are using simply because of the reaction. EXAMPLE: Take a guy like Walter Ray throwing the Phenom Unleahsed, naturally throwing straight up the boards, and if a guy like PDW were using that ball he would probably have to stand 3 lanes left of the lane he was bowling on.

I watch to see what they are using, but in no way will that make a difference in my next bowling ball purchase. I have witnessed on numerous occasions a guy bowling well during league with a certain ball and the following week there are 2 or 3 guys that have that same ball brand new!

I hope I am not totally unique in my process to buy a bowling ball. I always look for something different, something not really used before in a bowling ball. Surface on equipment today is all pretty close---particle, reactive company to company is going to be pretty similiar. Some companies are making blends which is pretty good as well. Where I look first is the core. Track releasing the morpheous and morpheous 2.0 cores have been totally innovative. That first attracted me to their equipment. Then I found out how great their customer service is, and how awesome they are at giving layout suggestions and you do not have to wait a week or hear from them.

BOTTOM LINEros are PROS for a reason. They are way better than any of us. They can virtually pick up any ball and make that ball look good. If you buy a ball because they were using and doing well, you will probably get disappointed when you hit the lanes and the ball does not work as well for you as it does for them.

Well said Ex, being a shop owner and in the business for some time, people did use to ask what ball a pro was throwing but not anymore other then to satisfy simple curiosity.  Question for you guys now..is the non caring brought on because you don't see the loyalty to one manufacturer from a PBA member or because you feel that you can score on your own without having the latest and greatest thrown by the PBA?  Remember, there was a time when everyone didn't have a dozen 300 rings under their belt...those guys WERE special.  Just curious...

TH834, I've also got your back.  The newer equipment is there to make the 160's into 180, 180 into 200, and 200 into 220. It was meant to bring the lower bowlers up to speed and level out the playing field and yes it has accomplished that. Did it make the 220 bowlers into 240?  Look at the pros, what do they average week to week?  Have they gone to 240 plus every week..I don't think so. If it wasn't for technology, you would still have guys at starting at 150 and retiring after 40 years with 175, 180 maybe.  Bones knows what I'm talking about.  Again, we don't allow aluminum in pro baseball, NCGA stopped it at titanium in golf, but the ABC did not stop technology in our sport.  They tried with 72 hardness and static weight controls and that doesn't even matter anymore.  For the players who had some kind of hand before, you have to either fluff it now or look for older, less hooking equipment to use.  Now, am I complaining because I have been surpassed because of technology??  YOU"RE DARN RIGHT!!!  ...lol   Just my opinion guys....

i tend to agree that people get sold on buying a ball thats too much for them just because its the hot thing or some pro they like is tossing it on tour.  Ive seen more 150 and 160 average bowlers in my league tossing the x-factors, infernos and vicious balls than i can believe.  Pro-shop guys arent going to complain too much when the guy absolutely wants that 200 dollar ball and cant get talked out of it.

Although I said I do not purchase a ball based on what the pros are using, many people do.

How many X Factors do you think Randy Pederson helped Storm sell when he was using it on TV a little over a year ago? The way he was acting you would think he was the 150 bowler that just got that new ball and averaged 180 for a 3 game set.
