Slide foot and distance to the foul line.

Is there an ideal spot to where the slide foot should stops if the ball is projected passed the foul line?

I was recently working on getting my foot closer to the foul line. When I was a younger bowler, I finished 1-2" from the foul line. Today I'm 6" away......

Looking around in the scratch league, there are few who finish <3 to the foul line. Most are further away. One guy who has a high average as a senior, finishes 3' but his ball is way passed the foul line. Others are a foot +/- few inches....

There is no "magic" distance that you should be away from the foul line.  It is what works for you.  You just need to make sure that you are setting the ball on the lane surface and not the approach.

Like Cory said there's no magic distance. You should be close enough to get the ball on the lane but also far enough away so you never foul

When I started bowling in senior leagues, I noticed quite a few of them were about a foot away from the foul line.  I asked one of them why and he said as you get older with slower reflexes and poorer balance, that extra room from the foul line lets you recover if you lose your footing/balance by having some dry area for your non-sliding foot.  If they ended up only a couple of inches away from the foul line, they would be stepping onto the oil and going down hard.

I've seen a senior take a bad fall, his back landing bewteen the gutters (not the gutter panels where the staff walks on). Seeing his back arch back as he landed hard put some on bended knees. Thankfully he was alright.

As far as laydown area, there are some bowlers who tend to lay their ball down on the approach. In fact, one night on the same pair, I've seen a guy sticking then using easy slide!! A lot of it! All because he was sticking due to the other bowler laying the ball down on the approach. That was happening more in the handicap leagues I was in a year ago...

Yeah, I see about one a season go down and some have to quit bowling for awhile.

I've started ending up further away from the foul line myself.  :)
Not something I used to worry about when I was younger.

I wonder if the bowler laying his ball down early would be violation of Rule 12. (Approaches Must Not Be Defaced). I know the doesn't state about ball, but I could see that as a big problem.
