How far over average to cash?
« on: October 23, 2003, 07:25:26 PM »
Let’s assume there is a handicap tournament (80% of 220) that has a condition that is similar to the house condition that all the participants have set their averages on. For a 9 game tournament how many pins over your average should you have to bowl in order to cash? How many to win?

20 to 30 years ago my assumption was if I average 10 to 15 pins a game over average I would cash. Depending on the size of the field the winning score would be 30 to 40 pins a game over average.

Today I still believe the cash to be in that range (for me anyway). The winning score however has gone up 40 to 50 pins.

If a 220 average bowler went into this tournament and bowled his average should he expect to cash?

Bones, you mentions Oil Capital and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.  I don't appreciate the outrageous scores allowed and the poor quality of the bowling alley run by that horrible three letter company.  I voice my opinion in the best way I can, by not participating and letting the tournament operators know why.  I already heard that All-Events is around 2320 by some kid from here in Wichita.  While this score is pretty good, if history holds true, it won't be the only one.

How much over average to cash is totally dependent on the scoring potential of the lanes.  If I shoot 20 over average in the Oil Capital, I won't cash.  However, if I do the same thing in the Greater Ozarks, I'm sure to make some decent money especially if I can get that much out of my partner and teammates.  Which tournament do I prefer?  Of course, the one with scores that seem reasonable to achieve if I bowl well.

Tournaments like the Oil cap was the reason I put the caveat on of a similar to league scoring condition. Realistically because of bagging and a lower average bowler who just matches up the scoring will be higher.

ksucat even our city tournament has taken about 2300 the last few years to win all events. I shot around 2200 scratch a couple years ago and got around 5th. A decade earlier I shot 2080 scratch and won.

But my real question then becomes how much better than your average to you feel you should have to bowl in order to cash? I feel about 15 over should be reasonable just to cash.

15-20 over per game is reasonable to cash for the scratch bowler competing in a handicap tournament.  20-30 over for lower average bowlers.  Why more?  I believe that the scratch bowler should have an advantage because he takes this game more serious and has worked harder to achieve a higher level of proficiency in the sport.  Hard work = More rewards.  I don't want to shut out the lower average bowler, only make them work harder.

Here's a simple example of how it should work:  The up and coming bowler averaging around 180 has the best tournament ever and finishes in a very respectable top 10 place.  This inspires him to go back and seek out a coach, practice more, read more, expand his arsenal in order to improve and compete with the scratch bowlers.

Around here the rule of thumb is 100 pins
over series to cash high. Except for the sport shots.

I tend to agree with most responders here .. I was amazed in another posting where someone pointed out that the HOINKIE (not sure of spelling) was won the last two years by a 170 average bowler going 300 over their average (4 games)! Scores like that would surely SEND OFF SIGNALS to all participants .. I wonder WHY it's so popular?
