Magic Carpet Thumb Inserts
« on: November 17, 2008, 05:07:53 AM »
In the course of trying to find the right fit and comfort level the adhesive naturally wears out. Does anyone know of any product that i can apply to restore the stickiness?

The adhesive really only sticks once, so it doesn't reposition easily.  But, the glue works just fine and lasts as long as any other.  If you didn't position it right the first time and if you have the room, you could super glue to the magic carpet to another piece of tape, then put the combo where you want the carpet.  I've worn the carpet out well before I had any adhesive issues.

Good trick is to put a 1" piece of white tape behind it.  Normally, you can move it around a bit before the adhesive on the tape wears.

I have used double sided tape on magic carpet.
Ron called me cheap because I was re-using the
Magic carpet.

this is just an example.

Yeah, do the white tape thing if you think you'll need to move it.  Otherwise the adhesive is great and you'll wear out the pile before you affect the glue.

I have found using "industrial strength" velcro tape obtained in either 2 piece or roll form from both Lowes and HomeDepot is a really economical substitution for the Magic Carpet. It doesn't last nearly as long but with the savings in cost pet unit I can afford to change out pieces more often. I've also found that the velcro tape albeit doesn't last as long but does have a "softer" feel touch-wise than Magic Carpet. And yes I am a cheap basta*d

Does it leave residue?  There was one brand of velcro that did that to me, in a pretty bad way too.  After the first experience, I didn't try it again.  For reference, I believe the backing I pulled that velcro off of just said "velcro".  Is that actually a brand?

Rubber Cement works great. You can find it at Ace Hardware, Lowes, Home Depot, etc.

Good Grief!!!! They are only $2.00 apiece, put in a new one! That's what I do, even if I screw up and position one incorrectly. Perhaps I ain't as cheap as some.

I have found that if you position the MC incorrectly you can immediately remove it and reposition it and the glue will hold OK.  I wouldn't try leaving it for a few days and then moving it.  --  JohnP
