Making Adjustment ? Move feet or change balls
« on: February 05, 2009, 03:38:13 AM »
Currently i carry 4 balls to league with me, my black widow for heavier oil and an earlier roll, my rapid fire for more medium conditions drilled for length, my power groove for dry lanes and a spare ball. this question arises for me quite a bit while the lanes are changing and i am making my adjustments. Do i change where i stand and where i aim or do i change balls to make the same shot? any input will be appreciated thanks guys

I always try moving my feet and/or target first.

First I obviously had a good look with the current balls shot shape generally a small move will keep that look.

Second the equipment I carry isn't that close together in reaction. I would have to get lined up with the new ball as well.

When adjusting for changing conditions I always chase the oil line and make double moves. 4 with my feet and 2 with my target, or 5/3 or maybe even 2/2 depending on the condition. Experience and watching my ball roll generally gives me a good idea of what combinations to use.

I have found that a good technique for house shots is an incremental move. About 1/4-1/2 board left ever other frame. So like every time you are on the left lane make that slight move left. Look at moving your mark about 1 left every 5 frames. This style of moving was taught to me by one of the top CBA bowlers from around here. He is also a staffer. It keeps you from missing a move and often times keeps you ahead of everyone else.

I always went with how comfortable I was with either the line or the ball. If I was in a good zone with a ball I would move feet. If I was in a zone in the area I was playing I would change balls. Most of the time I would always move.

I will always move feet and target first and then ball if needed. I will even try a hand position change along with moveing feet and target.

My view is that unless you've seen something in the lane condition change drastically then smaller changes with release/speed/foot movement/etc. should be enough to stay in the right part of the lane.

As far as I'm concerned, if the ball was working before and there's no major change going on on the lane, then you should keep that ball in your hand for as long as possible by making other adjustments.

At the end of the day, you know your own game and equipment best and are best placed to decide which is the best adjustment option in a given circumstance.
