Joe, unfortunately there is no magic ball or layout for the sport-type lane conditions some of us are seeing today. Also, not all sport patterns are made to be the same, either. I can put out a particular pattern in a house with a Brunswick synthetic surface and get a look that makes me play deep inside with a weak ball, and see the same machine setting/pattern at a wood house and play outside with a dull reactive.
However, personally, I do enjoy drill patterns that take the core out of play and allow you to rely on the nature of the coverstock, your ball roll/axis, speed, etc. to create the numbers you'd like to see on the scoreboard.
I probably didn't help, but oh well. You can just wait for someone to tell you to stand at 40, throw it right with a Midnight Scorcher sanded down 220 at 23mph.
And oh yeah, all bowling balls are round, if yall didn't know.
