14 lb ball carry ok?
« on: April 23, 2009, 07:40:23 AM »
So, a little history.  In the past I would always throw 16lb.  Started buying 15lb stuff and carry was good but 16lb seemed to carry better. I stuck with 15lb because i'm getting older.
I'm looking for a ball that will complement my Resurgence.  I was told the Rival is probably the best.  My dilemma is, I can get a used 16lb Rival but the extra pound may affect my speed and will probably hook the same as the Resurgence.  I can also get a used 14lb Rival. I would be able to throw a little faster and wouldn't hook as much as the Resurgence.  Problem is, how will the drop in weight affect my carry?
For those that made the drop in weight, how did it affect your carry?  Your average?

update:

14lb Rival has been ordered and is on its way.  Now another question, shall i have it drilled the same as my Resurgence or shall i drill it a little weaker?
This will be my goto ball after the lanes have broken down, heads are drying up and the Resurgence is hooking too much.

My friend threw a 300, with 14lbs last week.
With the sam entry angle, lighter balls carry less. But if you get higher entry angle with a 14# than a 15# then the 14 will carry better.

I don't know what is meant by puring every shot, but if you miss it at the bottom of the swing or have a noticeable loss in revs on a shot I imagine you will have a hard time carrying the 10 pin.  Or worse, you may fail to hit the pocket all together.  But, I don't see how this would be a weight issue, that's ball reaction more than hitting power in my opinion.

I'd like to go down to 14lb personally, but my coach says I won't be able to kick the 10 out as much when I have to get in and swing it.

i tried 14,15, and 16 pound ball..  my opinion is 16lb leave too many corner pin probably because its hit so hard..  14lbs ball just plain suck..  split city, no carry, no control, over power it..  15lbs just perfect..  carry excellent..  better control..

I have been using a 14lbs ball this year and I am averaging about the same as I was with 16lbs last year.  I also noticed that I had to adjust a little at first to keep from throwing it further out, but once I got used to it(week or two), I actually liked the 14lb ball.  For me, I have a tendency to leave more 8 pins, but I also feel that I get more head pins flying across and taking out the 10 pin.

i just recently switched to 14lb bowling balls for the summer... had some wrist pain decided to see if downgrading to 14lbs would help... and so far im liking what im seeing. I really see no difference, well wait no I take that back... I honestly am getting the 10 pin to go down more consistently. the speed has stayed the same but I am able to get in deeper and still get it to come back.
