Sometimes hook isn't the answer...

I've been a member of BR for years. Yes, I was even a gold member.

I keep hearing - it doesn't hook enough on oil - the ball doesn't hook - the ball doesn't hook enough - etc, etc, etc...

Sometimes, the answer isn't hook. Sometimes changing to something LESS aggressive, and actually hitting a target, and playing straight up the boards, is where the $$ is. So why do I keep hearing "it doesn't hook enough"???

Hook is never the answer.
Getting to the pocket at the right angle is.
Carrying the back row is good, too?

Accuracy = #1?

For THS conditions, this could be true.  More hook allows more area for the spray and pray bowlers. To some extent, accuracy may hinder a bowl on THS if they don't have much hook.  I'm not talking PRO like accuracy.

  Because there are so many people who have forgotten how to create their own hook and rely on the equipment to do it for them.

  Then, when they do hit some oil, they cry about it "not hooking enough".

  An example is our Thursday mens league. I just changed jobs and haven't been able to bowl on a regular basis, but last week the lanes were SO DRY that I had to use a highly polished CLAW hammer just to keep it from hooking off the lane while many others IN THE SAME HOUSE ON THE SAME SHOT were throwing virtual gravity's and rogue cells, along with many other highly aggressive balls, playing almost the same line/shot as I was!

  I was in complete amazement that they could keep it "in the building" while they were equally amazed that I could hook my CLAW at all. I was 8th high in the house last Thursday out of 75 men with a 631.

 TRUE bowling is a lost art. An art that had to be LEARNED, not bought in a box.

Alot of times straighter is greater, not all the time, but alot of times.

You challenge them to a few games and play straight up 5 and beat the snot out of them, LOL!!

I think the biggest problem is the easy house shot conditions soo many bowlers are bowling on. They start hooking a ball, then they buy a really big hooking ball then hook it even more. Then as we know they hit some extra oil or carry down and they whine like 2 year olds why their ball doesn't hook as much. I see it at my home alley here too. Especially some of the guys here who don't carry the ten pin all 10 shots, there like this stupid lane or these stupid pins and all I do is laugh because they spray and pray and yet don't even have a clue of what makes a ball hook.

Too many times a big hook brings the ball in "behind" the head pin, leaving some nasty spares. Lots of bowlers need to watch the videos of various hits to learn how the pins fall and which one hits which other ones and which pins the ball takes out (on a proper strike).

It's the entry angle that counts, neither too much or too little is good.

Alot of it depends on when you started bowling. Like me I started with plastic and rubber balls, you had to learn to hit your spot to score. Then urethane and reactives started coming out and everyone was hooking it out of the house. It all depends on how you learned to bowl, the correct way, or grip it and rip it.

In my opinion these house bowlers that just want to roll down the boards and let the oil direct the ball to the pocket and that is all they can do-thats not bowling. They already have a robot that can do that and probably soon they will have a monkey trained to do it too. I have more respect for the bowler who can actually read the lane,adjust the angle and not depend on the oil pattern to direct the ball to the hole for him. I used to bowl that way and have spent many yrs learning to read and throw angles(not always successfully) but at least it is challenging. Not the same old thing shot in and shot out and nite in and nite out.

I don't know about all that. The thing I look for personally is the last 5 to 3 feet, I don't know what you call it, I know it when I see it, and I don't care if it hooks 3 boards or 10 boards, or 15 boards, but its that little jump your ball makes right before it hits the pins, it carries every time.
