Different way to work out a thumb hole?
« on: October 20, 2004, 06:25:56 AM »
I was thinking about how to work out a thumb hole to fit perfect. What most people do, is drill a circular hole big enough to fit their thumb completely in to right? Then add tape as needed? Well what if you start with a hole that is actually too small to fit your knuckle in to, then work out the sides wide enough to fit your knuckle in to, then wide enough to fit your finger front to back? That way you dont end up with a hole that is too big front to back, right?

Here....an illustration: http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wNjExMzMyNnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D.jpg

see what Im thinking is if you do this, you dont end up with a thumb hole thats too big front to back, so you need little, to no tape. I mean this is all relative to how much your thumb shrinks/swells, but the main idea is just to have it good side to side and front to back. Thoughts, comments? Just throwing it out there. Oh, and I was thinking you could do it with one of those triangular files w/ the wooden/plastic handles they have.

Kid, it's called an oval thumb - folks have been doing it for a while.  Makes sense though.  Look at your thumb.  Is it really round?  Most aren't.

Rags, I know its an oval thumb hole, but what I mean is people tend to drill a thumb hole big enough to fit front to back, then do it sideways, making the front to back too big. It may just be the fact that alotta balls I had drilled were done by an absolutely horrible driller.

BK25,
We take measurements of the thumb and then measure the entry angle into the ball.

From here, we we determine what drills we use then cut the custom "oval".
It takes a little longer but the fit is great if done right.

I would love to have a thumbhole done like that, but unfortunetly, everyone around here simply drills a circle and 'works it out', and I still havnt found one comfortable done like that.

What we do is drill the round hole, and then we look at the customers' thumb and look at the angle the oval needs to be in and how much he might need. Then with a smaller drill bit (depending on the round-ness of the oval, we cut into the side of the thumbhole (at the angle needed) to create the oval. Then, all you have to do is work the bevel out a little.

Well, thats what we do in a nutshell.

Why, because BK25 wants a thumbhole that fits well?  Grow up.  Beter yet, why don't you tell the Brunswick rep that he doesn't know what he's talking about again.

Working out by hand takes a long time.  Hopefully you'll get the chance to try an oval thumb.  I'd hate to go back to a round thumbhole again.

every driller i've been too has this or something like it http://www.bowlersparadise.com/shop/bm/t_j/t_j_3_quot__mandrel_for_hand_drill.shtml

They drill the thumb hole like you said too small for me to ever dream of getting the sides in it, then oval it out with one of those things. I hate it though, because all drillers think i need the hole as tight as possible, even though i tell them i like the feeling of tape on the front of my thumb and magic carpet on the back. I think i finally found a driller in my area who does what i ask (most of the time) even if he doesnt think its right.

The only problem with ovaling by hand is getting a consistent feel from ball to ball.  I can almost guarantee most of the other balls will have the oval too big or it will be at the wrong angle.

We must be real fancy around here, every shop can drill ovals that match up perfectly from ball to ball.
