Most Versatile Ball???
« on: June 16, 2015, 10:05:30 AM »
I know this is going to be a very generalized question and one most serious bowlers would cringe at the very thought of, but if you were going to have only one ball, what in the Storm and/or Roto Grip lines would be the most versatile ball to have?

I'm a league bowler (no tournaments or sport shot leagues yet) carrying a 195 average, currently throwing a Roto Grip Theory as my primary ball.  My ball speed is 17mph and according to the pro shop guy that laid out the Theory, my ball speed and rev rate (which I don't know) are pretty even.  I don't know my PAP or any of the other "technical" layout info, but I do know that the ball is laid out pin down in what the driller referred to as a "controlled" layout.

Given the fact that I've raised my average by almost 15 pins since I started using the Theory  last winter (was throwing a Hy-Road  Pearl) I don't know that I really need a new ball, but I'm thinking about it before the fall/winter league starts up.

Thanks for any input/advise.

I agree that this can be a dangerous question haha...but you're in luck as I have similar speed/revs as you. For me, it is the Storm Marvel Pearl with 5 1/2" pin (pin above bridge) and CG kicked out slightly...very standard tournament layout.

When polished, I use it as my medium-dry ball (threw a 300 on a lane used after 2 leagues); when sanded to 1000 or 2000 grit, I can generally use it on most medium-heavy conditions (and sometimes on fresh tournament shots depending on how I play the lanes).

My Hyroad is a close runner up in terms of versatility...but I appreciate the stronger core/coverstock on Marvel Pearl as I am more confident about carrying and exploding the pin deck.

I guess the first question is whether you are looking to replace a ball with something newer or want a new ball to be weaker/stronger to compliment what you already have.

I know this is going to sound stupid, but I'm not really sure.  I  like the Theory and the way it reacts (much stronger than the Hy-Road Pearl) so if I had to say, I guess I'd like to replace it (the Theory) with something new(er) that's going to have the same or similar characteristics.  Possibly drilled pin-up rather than pin-down.   But at the same time I don't want a ball so strong that it's going to be of limited use.  And I've found that for my style/speed, the HRP is a nice ball to go to when the Theory starts breaking too much or too soon.

Hope that makes sense...

Thanks again!!

I would look at something in the IQ line. The tour, fusion, and nano are all pretty versatile. I think nano is really meant for heavy oil mostly so idk if you would consider that over the others but the fusion and tour are pretty spot on. Otherwise if you want something pretty tame and benchmark thats pretty good with surface/polish would be the hy-road

You were pretty spot-on Joker.  I went to Storm's "Matchmaker" page on their website, filled out the info with my specs and the ball it recommends for medium-heavy oil is the IQ Tour.

Now for another question.  What ball in Roto Grip's line-up compares to the IQ Tour?

Thanks again for all the input!!

Nothing in Roto Grip line up is really comparable. The IQ Tour is a pretty unique ball for Storm. That would probably be the best ball to get if it's what you are looking for.

If you wanted to take a look at Motiv, the Venom Shock is a great benchmark ball, similar to the Hy-Road.

Why not just get the IQ Tour?

If I had to pick a versatile ball from the storm line I would have to give it to the hy road since I still believe its the greatest ball ever made.
If I had to pick from the roto grip line I would Prolly have to give it to the uproar.ball can play deep , out all around.as belmo has shown on tour wen he was on his winning spree hyroad - uproar all day free win.
Just my opinion in the storm roto lines.

It really depends on your game but a couple of attributes come to mind.  First it should have a symmetric core. Second I think it should have a shell weaker than average
Tour fusion would be a good choice
