Officially hit my old man status, LOL! (No disrespect)
« on: January 17, 2014, 05:35:08 PM »
Today, I practiced on the WTBA Atlanta Pattern and I guess I just didn't have it. On the fresh, I was in the hole and threw the ball beautifully aged about 215 for 3 games. After that, I noticed my mechanics went all to pieces for the next 3 games. After getting home, I realized that my wrist is killing me and my body was worn out. Those who've seen my vid know I don't do anything special to the ball and have a medium-low speed. I think it is officially about that time to drop down to 14lbs to help improve my speed, increase my ability on THS by keeping me closer to the friction longer, and take less of a toll on my body.

My purpose of this post is to find out guys mindset as they dropped to 14lbs. What were some of your pitfalls and how did you adjust your equipment and layouts to accommodate? I thought about getting a couple used pieces and trying out some used stuff.

You can disagree, but if you are tired after 3 games dropping a pound isn't going to increase your endurance enough to make a difference.

If you said you were dropping so your wrist hurt less I would agree.  And you will probably muscle a lighter ball more as you will be able to manipulate it easier.

I'm not tired after 3 Games. You keep missing that point. I know that I mentioned in my post that it was game 3 but, it was game 23 this week. Considering it was game 23 of the week, I'd say I did pretty decent as far as endurance. My concern is not game 3, it's game 9 of a block in a tournament somewhere. That's what I'm hoping dropping the weight will accomplish.

Go ahead and do what you need to do to keep bowling. The drop in weight won't matter that much, IMO.

Also, you're a lefty. You're already getting help. *ducks*

I'm not someone to preach about being in shape.  But you need to be in bowling shape.  Game 23 of the week is nothing.  You should get tired around game 23 of the day.  I've known plenty of guys that were a long way from being in shape, but could bowl all day, every day.

Just because you bowl 3 or 4 leagues and practice a few times a week, stand in the pro shop and have another job doesn't mean your in shape or in bowling shape.

If you can bowl 23 Games in a day without a breakdown in mechanics atleast 1 shot, I salute you. LOL, although I somewhat get where you're coming from.

I understand that, long has pasted the days of 100 games/ day practice and shooting a few 300's, but I've gotten to that point where bowling is a no longer a skill but a hobby. I just always wanted to bowl the Master's and the US Open so I plan on getting in shape and doing that and a lot more tournaments and less league and small local tournaments.

I have to chime in here. I think 23 games in one day is a lot of something unless you're practicing to be a regular member of the old PBA tour. New ones seem to bowl a lot fewer games in any one tournament, in general.

When I was in high school & college, I used to practice what I considered a lot. Back then we got a sheet of paper to mark our games. The basic sheet had room for 16 games. I'd fill the sheet with my 16 games and then go home. Once in a while, I'd ask for a 2nd sheet to mor emore games if I thought I was doing very well or if I was doing very badly. I wanted to continue executing well or fix what I thought was wrong.

I can't remember feeling bad or my thumb or fingers or wrist hurting after those 16 games ever. I figured I was there bowling for something like 2 1/2 or 3 hours. Today, at 67 years old, I'd be thrilled if I could bowl 8 games at one time.

Just watched your link for the first time.  It does appear you are consistent. Your ball speed appears to be slow.  If so, I've got the same issue but I'm right handed.  I had dropped down to 14lb's.  As long as you have a good rev rate, you would really not have a problem with carry. Unfortunately I don't so I leave a lot of 7 pins and weak 10's. Physically I am not able to increase both. Multiple injuries throughout my bowling career has hindered that but I still enjoy the game.

exactly my point, I been doing this for 20 years, only in the last five years with proper fit and better mechanics. I'm happy to bowl 10 games with great mechanics. After that, its like 1-3 shots a game where my mechanics get stupid and it's a random guess.

I can agree with itsallaboutme, if bowling is a paycheck and happy home maker, then yes, getting in great shape and bowling with 16 lbs would be awesome. But I don't depend on bowling to pay my bills. So is if 14lbers help me throw 20 games in a day instead of 10, I'm great with that.

As long as I've been posting, you've never seen my Iink? Lol! Just playing Fanatic. I appreciate your info. I already struggle on THS because of lack of speed, that's why I throw a Roto Grip Shout with my benchmark layout on my avg THS. This is one of the reasons why I want to swap weights.
