Anyone know some good exercises for wrist strength?
« on: February 09, 2004, 09:46:28 PM »
I have problems getting the ball back far enough to produce enough speed and when I do I have a habit of "chicken winging" my arm so my wrist doesn't break down.  Anyone know some good exercises that help with shoulder and wrist strength to have a more solid setup/approach.  Would a brace help at all?  Thanks ahead of time for the responses.

I am guessing that you have a girlfriend.  That would be the only reason your wrist isn't getting enough exercise.  I have a girlfriend as well, thus I must resort to exercises such as those listed above by Bones.

I do the same as what Sawbones says but I use one 15 pound dumbbell and another 20 pound dumbbell for curls, arm and shoulder exercises while you watch TV. Also Thera-Band excercise bands. Remember to always, always stretch your wrist and arms  after each set of exercises. You can get the  Gold's Gym Forearm Exerciser this is great $14.95 at WALMAT. The Gold's Gym Forearm Exerciser allows you to target your foreams and wrists with ease. Its variable tension controls and dual-resistance cables ensure a smooth, safe workout.
    * Simply slide your hand into the padded exerciser and bend your wrist forward
    * You can feel smooth resistance provided by dual cables with a variable tension control
    * With padding and a foam grip, it provides you with a simple and effective workout
    * Great to do while watching TV, reading or working at your desk

One of the things that I found helped some was working a heavy bag.  I had a friend that was boxing professionally and recommended it as a good way to increase stamina (think cardio).  With proper technique, it also helped strengthen the wrists and to a lesser extent, the forearms.

After I broke my hand, I used a 10lb weight to do wrist curls to bring the strength back.  Never did get around to hanging the heavy bag back up after the last move though...

you've heard the rest, now hear the best!!!!!!!!!

take a 5 pound weight and tie a piece of rope (around 5 ft long) through the center.

heavily tape (so it won't slip) the other end of the rope to some type of stick or metal bar about 2 feet long.  tape the rope in the middle of the bar.

with your arms extended in front of you, and with your hands on either side of the bar (rope in the center), begin rolling the rope up on the bar by turning your wrists.  then roll the rope down . . . up . . . down . . .

you'll have wrists of steel that will make the ball feel like a BB!!!

leftside, badshot and trying have it right - all of these build wrist and forearm strength. When doing the wirst curls leftside suggests, sit down and lay your forearms face up on your thighs, w/ your wrists right at the knees. When you let the weight roll to your fingers, your wrists will bend over your knees - work your way all the way back.

When you use the rope routine, keep your arms straight out in front of you

both of these will make your forearm muscles BURN. When they burn, you are building strength.

PLEASE START WITH LITTLE WEIGHT! None of us no your current conditioning.

I use a Powerball to develop my wrist and forearms. Check them out at www.powerballs.com. You can find them on ebay much cheaper. I also sit and hold one of my bowling balls, fingers and thumb in the ball, then just curl the wrist. Do 3 sets of 10-12 reps to start. Work your way up to 12-15. Do that exercise every other day, while I use the powerball everyday. It has helped ALOT!! Good Luck
