Question for Power Players - Slightly stretched span?
« on: January 27, 2009, 04:17:27 AM »
Would a slightly stretched span (enable more ball contact with palm) make it easier to keep your wrist in stonger position so you get more power at release?

Looking a slo-mo of power players on tv, they have so much hand (palm) contact with the ball it looks like they are throwing thumbless but they are not.

Any thoughts?

cheers.

That's because most pros are using shorter spans, not longer.

Shorter is the way to go.  If you go longer, you have to go to a more radical thumb pitch such as mentioned by sawingemdown. In the 80's this was much more common, long span to get roll, and the boomers used crazy thumb pitches to get out of it yesterday.

You want some palm feel on the ball?  Drill your thumb pitch at 1" reverse and 1" left lateral.  That'll do it.  (DISCLAIMER, MIKE AUSTIN DOES NOT RECOMMEND THIS IDEA)

I bought a used ball of a guy this past year and when it arrived at my house, I could literally see the pitch in the thumb hole, it was angled so much. I got out my pitch gauges and the thumb was something like 1 1/4 reverse and 1 1/2 away. And the cut-to-cut span was close to 6 inches.

I hope I never make that guy mad, whoever he is. (g)

Be real careful if you do this.  I did this back in 1995 and screwed up my wrist.

The longer span feels more powerful when you have your hand on top of the ball when being measured.  But when you flip the ball over in the release position you tend to lock up in the ball.

The reality is that for 95+% of bowlers a relaxed span allows you to get more on the ball, it is easier on the hand, and allows you to do more things with the ball.
