Spare Game HELP ME
« on: October 01, 2007, 01:10:15 AM »
I had a JBT tournament last week and did pretty well shot +77 for 5 games. But I could not hit any spares to save my life. Im usually a decent spare shooter but I was missing everything. I have a lane 1 clear diamond spare and i was thinkin i might just switch to a regular old white dot. I dunno what it was but I would pick up my spare ball and turn into a complete spaz and do everything differnt. Any Help ?

Could be that you were over thinking your spare shot. After missing a few, you probably were telling yourself NOT to miss this one or that one. Once you tell yourself NOT to do something you are more then likely going to miss that spare.

Go out and just practice hitting your spares off a full rack. Shoot the 4 pin like you would if that was the only pin there. That goes for all your other spares.

Why you think changing to a new spare ball will make a difference? How much time do you spend in practice working on spare shooting?

Spare shooting is all in the mind. I just had it again last weekend, during first league start. Results were shaky, I missed a 10 and a 4-7 (among others), spares I can count on in training (recent 10 pin training had a 90%+ success rate, and last training I even managed a 100% on any single 10 leave). But you get upset, nervous, tense, and all the fluid movement is gone. After a miss, your confidence is shaken, and things might get even worse.

I'd also suggest rather putting some effort into practice, "donating" some games to spare shooting, especially the problem leaves. It is not only good for routine, but also builds confidence over time.

A new ball might help psychologically (this CAN happen), but mostly the spare shooting devil is just sitting in your mind and waits to strike out on you when you know it counts. Relax, believe in yourself, and convert. It is that simple
