Long pattern: strong ball, weak layout
Medium pattern: Strong ball, weak layout or medium ball, medium layout.
Short pattern: strong ball, rolly layout.
These are my basics for all patterns PBA or not. I will adjust coverstock strength depending on the surface we're bowling on. The biggest determining factor is the lane surface and the response times needed from the coverstocks.
Long pattern: Shark or Scorpion, I want a quick response cover that will transition quickly off the pattern. Virtual Gravity, Second Dimension, T-Road Pearl as they break down.
Medium pattern: Chameleon or Nationals, I want a medium response cover if I'm playing staight and a quick response if I have to play in. Both with medium benchmark type drillings. Hy-Raods mostly, T-Raod when they break down.
Short: Cheetah, I use a really aggressive cover and drill pin down for a very slow, smooth response. Hy-Road, Dimension with the pin 6" from PAP down and close to my midline.
Don't get too caught up in drillings. Focus more on coverstock and how quickly or slowly your equipment responds to friction at the house you are bowling at. Stronger drillings are rarely the answer.
