For Example:
Shark: strong reactive with a strong layout.
Scorpion:
Cheetah:
Viper:

Hi Nacpizle
For the shark pattern: I use a pin up storm passion(reactive) with 800 grit sand. Then second pin up passion with some polish.
The scorpian, I am still working on that one. most likely something reactive that will get into a role and have a nice arc, as the backend on a scorpian pattern can be kind of flippy if the backends are stripped.
Cheetah: I use a storm erazer blaze with a 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 pin up, then a Too Hot with a label drill, then possibly a storm ultra hot, or a B/G centaur with a light surface and a hot rod with a 5 1/4 x 5 1/2 pin under ring, polished.
Viper: Same equipment as Cheetah.
Chameleon: Eraze blaze 4k abralon, then an X-factor duece(4 1/4 x 4 1/2 pin next to ring) light surface, X-factor reloaded with a 5 x 4 3/4 pin up from ring finger with some polish and maybe my hot rod as the oil gets lighter.

Shark: AZO Pure Tactics 35x4 1/2x35 1000 abralon no polish, when it dries out I switch to a Nsane LevRG 70X2X30 when that is to much Hercules Pin over Ring finger Mb out one inch, Brunswick Rough buff with polish for finish

Scorpion: Pure Tactics Pin under Bridge MB out 2 inchs OOB finish, I usaully can bowl quite awhile with this, when I do have to switch I go to anything that will get down the lane and make a corner I am not picky really as long as the pin is up and it gets to the break point and makes the corner.

Cheetah:MoJave by MO, 70x2 1/2x40 will also use a Awesome Finish drilled pin through Ring finger MB out three inchs or a Nsane that is 60x5 1/2x70 with a duller finish if I want to swing it more but i try to avoid it also I like to use Vanilla hand

Viper: Dull Nsane mentioned above and the Finish usually if it burns out bad I will go to the MoJave also I try to stay as right as possible.

Chameleon: Finish and the Nsane again, The Nsane is a much better choice the dull one has a very controlled break point and is very predictable on the lane, If I see some carry down I go to the Finish becasue it is solid reactive and its drill pattern gets it rolling earlier on Shorter patterns if it bruns out enter MoJave again or the Ultra Radical Pro

Long pattern: strong ball, weak layout

Medium pattern: Strong ball, weak layout or medium ball, medium layout.

Short pattern: strong ball, rolly layout.

These are my basics for all patterns PBA or not.  I will adjust coverstock strength depending on the surface we're bowling on.  The biggest determining factor is the lane surface and the response times needed from the coverstocks.

Long pattern: Shark or Scorpion, I want a quick response cover that will transition quickly off the pattern. Virtual Gravity, Second Dimension, T-Road Pearl as they break down.

Medium pattern: Chameleon or Nationals, I want a medium response cover if I'm playing staight and a quick response if I have to play in.  Both with medium benchmark type drillings. Hy-Raods mostly, T-Raod when they break down.

Short: Cheetah, I use a really aggressive cover and drill pin down for a very slow, smooth response. Hy-Road, Dimension with the pin 6" from PAP down and close to my midline.

Don't get too caught up in drillings.  Focus more on coverstock and how quickly or slowly your equipment responds to friction at the house you are bowling at.  Stronger drillings are rarely the answer.

Considering I only have 4 balls and 1 is a plastic for spares.  I will be having to adjust the cover for the different patterns.
We already played the Viper.  I used my Resurgence at 2000, my Rival at 4000 and an old polished Rhino pro.

Shark is next.  I'll probably take the Resurgence to 1000, leave Rival at 4000 for when conditions break down.  Not sure i'll use the Rhino pro.

I'll adjust the surface accordingly when I tackle the other conditions.

I wish we had PBAX leagues in my area.  I cant seem to find any.  I want to see what they are all about. I hear the patterns are extremely difficult.  I just want to see for myself.

Strong covers with 5 3/4" or 6" pin distances are the best.  How many fresh patterns have you seen that you can use a Tropical, Jolt, T-Road Pearl or similar ball to start with?

For PBA experience leagues it's usually 3, maybe 4 games, how much will they actually break down?

Now in longer formats everything is the same I just shell down to covers with similar characteristics as the fresh balls.

And now that I reread the post I use zero strong layouts, just stronger covers.
