Maxim for strikes?
« on: October 03, 2004, 04:52:04 PM »
I have been thinking about practicing with my maxim spare ball for strikes. My thinking is since it is a plastic ball with no core you would really have to work for a strike and wouldn't have any room for mistakes it would exaggerate any mistakes simulating a tougher condition does this make any sense to anyone?

Using plastic for a strike ball does tend to take the lane conditions out of play. You don't get as much help as you do with reactive.

What you do get, however, is a lot of corner pins. If you really want to learn how release and roll changes affect carry, this is the best way to learn.

You never get a lucky strike with a coreless plastic ball you have to work for a strike and you do get better spare practice because you are so sloppy but didn't realize it before.

This would of course only be used for practice and of course you cant practice playing 4th arrow with your plastic ball but for people that need practice squaring up playing up the boards this could be great.

Generally, I'll use my maxim in practice when I'm working on spares.  It will leave a lot of corner pins.  I had one night that I used it in league last summer.  The lane machine wasn't working properly.  The lanes ended up with heavy oil outside of 11, and almost no oil inside. I played a tight 20 - 15 line, and had the high score for the night with a 246. I did leave a couple of 10's in that game.  The next week I tried the maxim again, and I couldn't score over 180.

I bowl with my plastic from time to time, just for fun. It helps me get my accuracy back in tune a bit, and lets me practice playing really close to the gutter, which is my one really weak spot. All you gotta do is crank it and get those pins flying around lol. (Oh, did I mention throwing it 12 mph? lol) Im not sure though, because I think my spare ball has a softer cover then alot. I have a storm spare ball, but its a swirly one that i've never seen anyone else have before, and I cant find it online. Who knows.
