Maximum time before the start of delivery

What is the maximum time a player should takes on the approach before starting (the first step) the delivery of the ball?

I don't believe that there is a set time. But if you look back at some old videos of some of the greatest of all time(i.e. Earl Anthony, Mark Roth, Dick Weber, etc.) they took very little time on the approach. Walter Ray takes very little time also.

IMO the more time your up there the more time you start second guessing yourself, you should have an idea what you want to do before you ever set a foot on the approach

Ive read somewhere that you should take around 5-7 seconds.

Well, the PBA put in the shot clock because of the amount of time Ernie Schlegel took on the approach. The max before you're fined is 30 seconds.

We have a bowler in our handicap league that routinely takes 45-60 seconds. Per shot.

Someone told me once, " if you don't know what you want to do when you step up on the approach, you have no business ON the approach".

  I always thought that meant to get it right in your mind, then get up there and go, not stand up there all day trying to figure it out and get ready.
