May I borrow your thumb?
« on: December 27, 2003, 08:46:09 AM »
Ok heres the deal, I bowl all the time and I ALWAYS tear my thumb knuckle up. Is my pitch off? Could I be gripping the ball wrong? Maybe my span is off?

Could be any of the above, or the hole could be too small.
Get to the nearest reputable pro shop and have them check it out.

Pitches are probably the main culprit, and once you get the fit right, try Magic Carpet from Ron C.  It is by far the best thing for the thumbhole; better than the foam thum pillow.  When you first use one, it can cause a redness of the back of thumb, BUT that is just a breaking in stage.  Keep us informed.

As others have said you can't really tell without seeing your thumb and the ball.

If the thumb is tearing on the top of the knuckle the most likely culprit is a thumb hole that is too large. You will bend, "knuckle", your thumb to hand onto the ball. You can use to tape to tighten the hole to where you can't bend the knuckle.

If you have too much reverse pitch in the thumb this can also cause you to try and knuckle the ball.

Tearing on the sides of the thumb are normally from thumb pitches. The thumb hole should then be pitched away from the torn area.

The span is can cause problems from the point of you end up making the thumb hole to large to correct for a bad span and/or too much reverse added for a span that is too long in order to not lock up in the ball.

The span is easily checked. Put your thumb fully into the ball then lay your fingers across the finger holes (do not stretch your hand just lay it on the ball). The first knuckle on a fingertip fit should go at least 1/3 of the way across the finger holes, 1/2 preferably).

I have come to the conclusion that my thumb hole is to big.
