May seem like a rhetorical question ... but...
« on: January 19, 2010, 07:27:28 AM »
Do pro bowlers find it difficult to bowl well on THS? I mean, typically they practice on conditions they're accustomed to where as THS doesn't require a great deal of accuracy (i.e. area).  I've witnessed as well as bowled with P.A. and I'm yet to see him practice on a THS!  Perhaps the next time I will ask him this question as well.  There's also a driller at one of the lanes I bowl, he received his PBA Card last year, brags that he's a "Pro Bowler", yet gets 'whacked' when throwing against other 'really good bowlers' in the Sat. league.  Heck, he even had a guy who's been bowling little over 2 years throw 300-268 against him!  I'm not bashing, but it piqued my curiousity to ask (if it hasn't already been) the question.

I would say yes, the wet/dry on most THS is too severe for most pros or those that bowl alot on sport or difficult conditions. You only need to look at the scores for last years PBA house shot tournament compared to the Red White Blue open this year. With a softer blend, the pro's scores went thru the roof!

PS: Getting a PBA card doesn't automatically make him a great bowler, either though.

I wouldnt say they find it difficult to bowl well, but its certainly harder for them to "excel" over good league bowlers. They can only average so much.... if a guy averages 240 at his home house, he'll be tough to beat no matter what. 300-268, not a lot you can do about scores like that. Put that guy against the Pro on a sport shot and see how well he does..

Agreed. Many who don''t know what it takes to get a PBA card, tend to hold him in the ''highest'' regard, therefore ultimately impressed by the fact he''s a member.  I''m sure many of us know/have knowledge of someone who easily qualify but do not have (their own personal reasons).

Like mentioned, I''m yet to witness any PRO BOWLER throw "exceptionally well" on a THS!

I would say for the most part yes, they do but they can adapt...

my reasoning is, this..  On a Sport shot, the backends tend to be DRY, so while they are burning a groove in the lanes, they dont have to really "work" the ball alot to make it hook...

On a THS, the backends might not be as DRY, depending on how often or well they are stripped..  So they might have to work the ball more and thats when they encounter the wet/dry.

Now the old bowling alley I bowled at, has a Regional Pro for the GM.  And he averaged about 235 for the league he bowled on, while other house hacks were also around 220 to 230..    During one City Tournament, I was on the same pair for the team event as said pro, and The House condition @ where we bowled at was a very heavy oil condition.

While he struggled to carry, IE leaving weak 10's even a pocket 8-10!! and various other odd pocket hits he should of carried.  the rest of us bowling on the pair had no issues with scoring/carrying..  I end up shooting a high 600, while said pro, i think shot 590..maybe, And he didnt miss the pocket the whole time.

But yet, I seen him bowl a Regional Stop, and for the 10game qualifier he averaged about 250.. I myself averaged 190....
