I'm very close to giving up on bowling...
« on: February 17, 2016, 12:43:29 PM »
I've been bowling for about a year and a half now. Tried working and working on things and now I'm having issues where my wrist is hurting. I don't have much of a backswing. I physically can barely throw the ball after about half a game. The first couple shots I feel a pain in my wrist as I let go of it. Then after about half a game I barely can hold the ball. I've been trying to learn 2 handed since my wrist started hurting as it doesn't hurt at all to bowl like that but after about a month of trying that I can't even come close to getting that down. About to give up..

I'm sorry to hear about your struggles. The game can be frustrating enough without the added issue of pain/injury. As someone who tried two-handed bowling for a year, I know the struggles of trying to convert to that from a traditional game. Have you considered switching hands? Obviously, that would come with its own challenges, but it might be kind of fun since it would be like learning the game all over again. I've dabbled in bowling LH, and I'd love to actually commit to it for a league if I had the availability to bowl more than one night per week. Whatever you do, don't give up. Look into drilling or fitting options to take pressure off of your hand/wrist, or try to pick up something new. Who knows what you might find!

Great feedback Gene

Bowling is a sport that NO ONE has mastered completely. It takes years of dedication to get to where you want to be.

The single most important aspect of the sport (and anything in life) is that it is personally enjoyable. Bowling is a sport to enjoy and a science to explore. Definitely should not be painful whatsoever. Mechanics and ball to hand fitment should be tailored to one's comfort.

I have one of Hall Of Fame's, Norm Duke's bowling balls and his ball is sharp enough to cut someone's fingers. It is tailored for him not to squeeze and is a technique that involves finess.

In summary, don't waste your time or money on something you won't enjoy.

1) Identify your game
2) Tailor it

The best thing I ever did was go to a lighter weight ball when I started having wrist and elbow pain.  I now use 12# equipment, still average 200, and bowl pain free.  Makes the game much more enjoyable.

Before you try anything bowling related, what did the doctor say was cause of the pain?

If you haven't gone to a doctor/physical therapist/medical expert yet, why not?

Try 2 handed?
Try one of those monster wrist support things?
Most used:
Motiv Venom Shock (14)
DV8 Grudge Hybrid (14)
Hammer Scandal (14)
DV8 Freakshow (14)

Sometimes.
C300 Swerve (14)
Motiv Jackal LE (14)

Retired:
Roto Grip Sinister (13)
Motiv Jackal (14)

Given to a no-thumber in the club:
Brunswick T-zone (13)

Might stick with Motiv from now on.

As a new bowler myself, Your ball is tooooo heavy. I started bowling with a 16lbs. ball and my wrist was hurting. I went down to a 14lbs. ball and everything is fine. I weight 137lbs. Try down sizing your ball.

YA I agree here, why try a bunch of stuff without knowing the underlying issue? It will take a lot less time to go find out what the problem is vs continuing to experiment and possibly causing more harm then good.

You may have nothing more than something like tendonitis, which would be 2 weeks of therapy instead of bowling. Then Bam, you slap a wrist brace on and good to go.

This is what I would do.  First off get a 12 or 13lb ball.  Then get a metal wrist support so you're not in pain.  Then take a few lessons so you can work on form.  There are some great videos lessons for free by Norm Duke on the Internet too.  Bowling comes down to repeating shots.  You need to be totally relaxed and balanced when you bowl.
There is a lot to it but you should be working on maybe two things each time you practice so you don't get frustrated.  It takes a long time to get really good.  Practice, practice, practice

If you do get a wrist brace, make sure you go to the pro shop and get refitted with the wrist brace on. Usually with a wrist brace your span will need to be shorter.

But as others stated, go to a doctor first.
