Measure PAP from Bow tie?
« on: July 31, 2008, 03:27:43 AM »
I know this has been discussed many times but doing a search I could not find an appropriate answer.

If one sees enough oil lines on a ball to clearly see where the lines cross (the center of the "Bow Tie") does that crossing point indicate the NAP? If so, then one could look exactly 180 degrees around the ball and mark the PAP.

Is this correct? If so, that would be a good starting place to put the tape to watch it move and subsequently adjust it for a precise PAP measurement.

Or have I got it all wrong?

The PAP is measured from the center of the grip.

By using the first rotation of the track is a point about which the ball rotates on that first rotation. Since the track is where the ball contacts the lane then the NAP would be on the other side of the track.

Tape on the bowtie would rotate wildly.

And what's even better is when someone unecessarily posts right after that first post with some inane, unuseful insult as you seem to have a habit of doing 'bait.

Lets all listen and pay attention to the Professionals, they usually have it right as Rico does this time.  And don't worry too much about the NAP dicnic, it will only be very useful to those with really goofy ball rolls where traditional layouts aren't effective.

The pap would be about in the center of all the oil rings. A better way is to throw a plastic ball with your normal release right down the middle in the oil. Center of the oil rings is your pap. Check it with tape. Make a construction paper (cheap) ruler and take a measurement from where you think your pap is to the center of the verticle grip centerline. This will give you a ROUGH idea of what your pap is.
