coaching
« on: December 11, 2008, 08:51:39 AM »
Tomorrow I am going to get my first coaching ever.  I have no idea what to expect except help.  The guy I am going to see was recominded to me by a buddy so I am hoping it helps.  I have been bowling for a long time and just need so help with things.  To the guys that have coaches do you see them often or just when you are having trouble.

Best thing you can do is to go into it with an open mind. I use to see a coach back home to fine tune a few things. Everyone is different on how often or how long they see a coach.

Go in to the meeting with an open mind.  Also don't give answers and make statements that you think the coach wants to hear.  Be as open and honest as possible.  The right coach will help you fine tune some things.  The number of times you see the coach is up to you and what your goals are.

After about a year of bowling, I was stuck around 150 average and knew it was time to get lessons.

My coach asked me the first time if I was willing to unlearn everything I was doing and start over.  He warned me my average would go way down, and I would need to "practice, practice, practice" as all of my bad habits would be fighting to come back.

He was right about everything.  And he got my ball speed and revs up, I consistently hit my target, I am way more confident, and I look like a completely different bowler.  Now, after about 4-5 months of bowling like crap, 5-6 lessons, and lots of practice, my average is going up again, and I just bowled my highest game ever (222).

I am so glad I got a coach!

This is all good advice, thank you.  I will do whatever it takes to be better.

I went to the coach today and it was awesome.  My problems were easily fixed and with a little practice i will be on point for the nation.  my arm swing was not free, my power step was not long enough and had to find a good targeting system for spears.  He really helped me and now I hope I can win some money come tourney time.

It depends on how much "homework" you get. If the coach suggests small, easy to incorporate changes to your game, it doesn't take much practice to groove those changes into muscle memory and the mental game. You could probably work with the coach once a week for those types of changes.

If the changes are large, it will take more practice and effort to make them a part of your game. During those times, you might not need to see your coach as often, though it is a good idea to check back to make sure you're on the right path.

When you're having trouble is the best time to see a coach. Another person's (trained) eyes can see things much faster than we can see about ourselves.
