Medium oil Benchmark
« on: April 18, 2009, 01:01:49 AM »
Hello all.  I'd like to pick up a nice medium oil control ball with PBA patterns in mind.  I have light oil (Visionary B/G Centaur) and med/heavy (Storm Tour Power) covered, but don't really have anything for true mediums.  I'd prefer something with lower RG, but still pretty clean through the heads.  With my rev rate, balls that lope a lot don't seem to read PBA patterns well for me.  I'm open to most manufacturers, but would prefer something without a labor intensive cover (Ebonite, Hammer, Columbia, Track).  I always like trying different companies - I don't own any AZO, Lanemasters, or 900 Global.

The Break or Cell sound like what I want, but probably more ball than I want.  I probably won't want polish on a PBA league and don't want to drill the guts out them either.

Other ideas?
Brunswick - Copperhead, Sidewinder (still available?)
Lanemasters? Don't really know anything about their line, but would like to try
Visionary - Gladiator Solid

Edit - I'll most likely buy this through my pro shop, so I'd prefer to stay with current releases that he would either have in stock or easily order.

I have a sidewinder and a cell pearl. Both are pretty strong, sidewinder is ok on meds if you've got a longish pin-PAP

It's been ages since I threw a PK18 ball.  Would a pearlized PK18 fit for medium oil with my rev rate (profile)?  Brunswick's description on BBR says the Swarm has a strong skid/flip reaction.  Recovery is always good, but on a PBA shot, I'd probably get a ton of over/under.

I'd suggest either a Creature solid with some of the stock shine taken off or the Ogre Pearl.

Given you're using a benchmark ball, Tour Power, as a medium-hevay oil ball, I think you need a milder core, like both of the the above have.

FYI The Creature is basically a polished Pulse. Take the shine off, a try it at P3000 or P4000 grit and it could be one your better balls for your purpose.

The Ogre Pearl has a strong-ish cover given the high RG core and mild flare. It makes up for not having a low-ish RG by the strength of its cover. For most users, it acts like a low RG ball.

I was surprised at how strong the Tour Power is.  It's at 1000 grit, but it fits so perfect where it's at that I don't want to change it.

I only looked at BBR and they implied the Creature was a pearl.  After looking at 900 Global's site, it is indeed a solid.  My driller is one of the bigger Global sellers in the area.  I'll be sure to ask his about it.  It does look like just what I need.

If I am not mistaken, the creature comes in both a solid AND a pearl, so be sure to specify which one it is you are looking into.

If you want a benchmark ball for that I would get a Gamebreaker if you can find one, cant beat if for benchmark reaction. I know you dont want Ebonite, but there really not anymore high maint. than anything else.

I know about both Creatures after looking at Global's site, but thanks for the reminder.

A team mate has a Gamebreaker.  Good looking ball, but too much ball for my needs, plus I haven't matched up well with Ebonite specifically in a long time.

Charlest is spot on, the creature solid is a great benchmark ball.

Have you considered the 900 Global Maniac?  I have one drilled pin up, 5" x 3-1/2" weight hole at P2 location.  OOB finish (1000 Abralon) was too strong for a house shot, so I took it to 2000 Abralon.  It is an excellent benchmark and is very smooth and controllable.  I think it would work great for sport or PBA patterns.  I will definitely take it to Nationals with me this year.

I was going to suggest the creature as well.. I just got this ball and it bleeds CONTROL.. I got it for medium light and it is perfect drilled with the pin at centergrip.. I took a little bit of the shine off to smooth it out even more.  shot 299 first night out.. The ball is medium oil for sure but from what I have seen is you could tune the cover for a variety of conditions.. polish it up for lighter.. or dull it down for heavier..I think the ball would be pretty good on a pba pattern as well..

The sidewinder would be another choice cause it has a couple of things going for it.. I would say it is for medium heavy oil though.. It is a particle hybrid and should be pretty smooth..this ball is supposed to be pretty good on sport patterns.

I have also heard the AMF villain is pretty smooth for medium..

If you want the creature , look at the AMF for sale on here.. they had a bunch for sale on the NIB closeout.. or you can find it online for 90 bucks shipped from bowlersdream.. they found me the exact pin and weight I wanted..
