Middle finger ache
« on: August 01, 2008, 01:08:00 PM »
Need your help I'm 67, small hand been using an extended Pro Release for a number of years. It has slammed against my middle finger and caused some swelling and arthritis. Last yr(after a 2 yr layoff) i used a 13lb ball that was drilled to a semi(prior to that i had been using a full finger tip) A couple of months ago i went to a 14 with a finger tip i noticed that my middle finger was achy until at least 5 frame went by. Tonight the feeling never really went away. Any suggestions? semi or conventional grip? Finger Pitches(mine are now at 0 now)? I'm open and in need of your help.  Thanks.

if your middle finger was hurting at the tip I would say 0 pitch might be a bit too aggressive...even possible might be stretched out a bit on the span....but at 67, Id say pitch is too strong.

Few different things I would suggest.  First check all your span with the pro release on before you do anything else (like Ric said).

Second, if your using inserts what type are you using?  If your using the full lift inserts, then you might want to try Semi lifts or ovals.  That will cut down on the pressure on the finger by a bit.

Third, if neither of those work then play with the pitches.  Just start going away at either 1/8" or 1/4" at a time.

Lastly, if none of the other things suggested work, then you COULD try a backwards Sarge Easter Grip.  And drill the middle finger conventional and leave the ring finger the way it is.  I know a lot of people go to the Sarge Easter Grip when their ring finger starts hurting, so I don't see why you couldn't go to a backwards Sarge Easter Grip.  Just my suggestions.  Your best bet would be to go to a good pro shop and ask them about it.  They should be able to help you out.

Good luck with the finger

Make sure your span is correct first. Using a Pro Release, were you fit for your grip with the Pro Release on? You could very well be stretched.

Just what I said to "the sleeze" in a PM an hour ago. Also try a "pinky hole" to take some stress off the other two fingers. It could be arthritis, tendonitis, any number of things... including finger pitch and span. Good luck.

imjouster, you do not know a thing about ball drilling so why are you suggesting a Sarge Easter grip on the middle finger.

Fingers normally hurt due to improper fit.

The fingertip grip was invented by Connie Schowegler back in the late forties/early fifties due to arthritis in his bowling hand as back then everybody used either a 2 finger grip drilled to the second joint or a 3 finger grip drilled to the second joint.

Since the knuckle on his second joint was hurting so bad he thought why not use the first knuckle and alas the birth of the fingertip grip.

I'll admit straight out that I don't know as much about drilling as some of the people on this site, on the other hand he was asking for SUGGESTIONS.  Those were my suggestions.  Oh, and by the way, whats to say that the pain he is having in the finger is in the 2nd joint.  I know a lot of people that have pain in the first joint.  And if he's having pain in the first joint then my suggestion is VERY valid.  By the way, the origination of the fingertip grip has absolutely NO reason to be in this thread, it is not helping in the least.  So why don't you leave your flaming posts to yourself.

And, it could be that you are "flipping the bird" too often!!!!! Perhaps you should flip the bird with your non-bowling hand and save the strain on your bowling hand.

Since I am older than you are, I am allowed to post this silly response.

Good luck in solving your problem.

I would say 0 pitch in the fingers is probably wrong.  Your fingers most likely do not bend that much.  That kind of pitch would put the pressure on your joints not the pads of your fingers.

I had a very similiar problem a few years ago. I did some experimenting with my driller and ended up with 1/2" reverse on the middle finger and 3/8" reverse on the ring. We did small increments until the pain was gone and I was able to have a relaxed grip on my ball.

It might not solve your problem but something to consider.

I have suffered through middle finger pain from an old knuckle injury, and after putting up with it for a number of years I worked it out with the help of my pro shop guy. Through gradual changes we eventually shortened the span on my middle finger 1/4" and went from 1/16" to 3/8 reverse pitch. In doing so we also had to shorten my ring finger span 1/16" and take it to 3/8 away also.
Another thing we also did was go to a harder finger insert from the soft ones I was using.
Now I can bowl 3 games of league pain free. If I bowl 5-7 games I might have a slight ache in it for a short time. I enjoy bowling much more now.
This is what worked for me, hope this gives you some hope.
