Midpriced pearl ball....
« on: January 11, 2009, 04:29:55 PM »
I'm starting to do some looking for a midrange pearl ball, I don't really care for a high end ball, but besides that i'm pretty open. You can see my stats and equipment in my profile, I'm just looking for a midrange pearl that I can use to open the backends up some more. I like me set up but the downfall is I have smooth stuff and my Tropical isn't enough for what i'm looking for, any suggestions?

Thanks
Mike

If you can find one, a Roto Grip Horizon Pearl is a great ball.  I've thrown a couple of really big sets with that ball and its always in my bag.

Otherwise, might want to try Storm T-Road Pearl.  My father is absolutely in love with his, and from I can see its a solid piece.

Could also try the new Hy-Road.  Might be a little higher than Mid-Range, but not much.  Yes, it does have the hybrid coverstock, but its a very easy ball to throw and won't jump left when it sees dry boards.

Disagree entirely.  I love my Gravity Shift, but it's hardly a good ball for more medium conditions.  When there's some friction, but not enough to use really weak equipment, you don't want to throw a very strong cover, low RG high-end pearl.  That's the kind of condition on which you'd want to throw something like the T-Road Pearl or the old discontinued Spit Fire -- it'll give you some strength in oil, but save its energy much better than a high-end ball.  There's no difference in quality between a mid-range ball and a "good" ball, the "good" ball merely is just meant for a higher volume of oil.  That's just how bowling ball pricing structures work.

No, strong pearls (Gravity Shift, Cell Pearl) are for medium-heavy oil, mid-range pearls (T-Road Solid, Illusion) are for medium conditions, and weak pearls (Tropical Storm, Neptune) are for light oil.  Just because a ball is pearl doesn't mean it's not going to handle oil.  The Gravity Shift is incredibly strong, it's R2X pearl is one of the strongest coverstocks I've ever seen.  It can handle pretty much anything but a flood, especially if you knock the polish off it.  You are trying to generalize things entirely too much -- just because a ball is pearl doesn't mean it's weak.  It just means that it has mica added to the cover to make it a little stiffer, which increases skid in oil and improves response to friction compared to a solid version of the same coverstock.

Wow, thanks for the plethora of replies guys. I'm not really all about Storm, just happened to get some deals and like a few of their balls, I'm very open to all companies. I am really considering the Rapid Fire Pearl, I have found that all variations (i've tried them) of the FE2 core that storm uses for me results in a pretty smooth reaction even with a pearl shell, the fire line core is pretty snappy. I'm just trying to assemble a list so down the road I have a good idea if I run across a closeout or bargain, so if you can think of some older stuff as well thats awesome.

Thanks again

P.S. My Hy-Road is pretty darn strong, I don't have a ton of ball speed so I might be looking a little on the weaker side of the spectrum.

Its a few years old but its what I use for that spot, I would recommend finding a Roto Grip Mercury. A Neptune may work in that spot as well but I prefer the Mercury.

You may also look at the Roto Grip Venus (it is a particle pearl), since adding this gem to my arsenal I have found that it can handle more oil than advertised.

Not saying I particularly recommend this, but you can get a sweet deal on Lane #1's G-Force Evolution right now -- I've seen them for as low as $90 from some sellers. It's an OK ball, not my favorite from Lane #1 but for the price, well...

If you like Storm, T-Road Pearl or Thunderstruck Pearl (again, lots of good deals to be had on the Thunderstruck series).

My vote goes to the Ebonite Playmaker. It has been the first ball out of my bag since I bought it approx. 4 months ago. I've never had a ball reserve all of it's energy for the back end like my Playmaker does plus it mixes the pins extremely well while keeping them low.

Emerald Vibe or even a Cherry Vibe.  The Vibe series is by far the best bang for the buck right now.

Swarm and Playmaker either ball is a great choice. Physco is not bad either but tends to roll out quicker.
