Can someone please explain his drilling style....never seen this before.

He uses a sarge easter grip.

As far as the pin placement he has a very...VERY short PAP coordinate.  I think it's barely 3" over.  He doesn't look like he spins the ball at release but his PAP is very close.  If he puts pins around 5" and 5.5" from this PAP they end up over left of his grip.

Sean Rash has a similar PAP and many of his drillings place the pin left of his grip.

In very general terms, 3 3/8" pin to pap is a strong drilling as you move the pin further from the PAP the ball gets weaker.  So for a PAP of let's say 3" over, drilling a ball with a 4" pin would put it roughly under the middle finger (for a right handed bowler)

It's not about the pin being "left of the grip".  It simply placing the pin a certain distance from the PAP.

If your PAP is 5.5" over and 1" up, a 5" pin (weaker, lower flaring) pin placement would put it somewhere between your bridge and ring finger (depending on how high).  However for Mike his PAP is something like 3.25" over and 1" up...so a 5" pin places it 2.25" further to the left, or somewhere just left of the middle finger.  It's the exact same drilling...you just have to take the grip part out of it.  The grip is just a bystander, it means nothing.

+1 on Russell's post but want to add something to it.  Years ago, putting the pins and cgs left of the grip was considered drilling a ball negative.  Now, with the evolution of the sport, completely scratch that thought process.  Now with having cores inside the bowling balls of various strengths, drillings are solely based on a bowlers axis point.  NEVER AGAIN can someone just look at a layout on a ball and say whether it is the correct drilling or not.  Like Russell said, a 5 ich layout for one person is going to look very different than another person's 5 inch layout.  For me, a 5 inch layout is pin above the ring finger.  For someone else, it may be pin above the middle finger.  And, for someone like Fagan, a 5 inch pin is going to be even farther left. 

This is the cool part of this game we love.  It continues to evolve so it doesnt get boring.  We guys like myself that have been doing it for 30 years still learn something new everyday.  The biggest thing to know, is that completely wipe out of your mind what was right 20+ years ago.  It is a whole different sport now.

Something that strikes me as interesting about this topic is that with such a short horizontal measurement on his PAP that places his grip holes in quite a different location on a 5" pin to PAP layout.

It would be interesting to see how much of a difference that would make to core dynamics once the holes are drilled.

like what Russell said fingers holes are a bystander in his layouts. Take mike Fagan and walter ray. If they both drill a 5" pin its going to "look" way different when you add finger holes thats only because of their PAP. The pin to PAP is still 5". So assuming fagan and walter had the same span pitch holes sizes etc there is no difference in effect from either of their balls. becuase the holes are still hitting the cores in the same aspect with respect to their PAP.

Yes, there is a difference because the holes are removing material from a different location on the core of the ball.

I suspect if I went through the trouble of entering the data into Blueprint, my assumption would be correct.

I would like to see some numbers on that aspect of it. I may be wrong in what I said about not changing. I was basing my idea on the fact that your right it will hit the core in different locations but the balls and cores are also rolling on different axis plane.
