Bowlers Thumb/Large swollen tendon
« on: November 13, 2012, 09:23:09 AM »
I have never really noticed it because i thought it happened to everyone. The tendon that connects my thumb to my palm is very enlarged and you can actually feel it and move it around. I did some research and found the medical term "Bowlers Thumb" but i have never heard of it. Does anyone have any information on this or have experienced it? What are the proper steps to treating this? (cant go to hospital no health insurance lol)

Thank You

It's a buildup of fatty tissue due to the protective sheath around the nerves being damaged.  The fatty tissue is trying to protect the nerves from further damage.

I have it and I'm dealing with it.  Have your pro-shop shape the top of the thumb hole to match the "lump" at the base of your thumb to relieve the pressure.  It might not be perfect, but the lump should go down in time otherwise take some time off away from bowling, but the thumb hole will still need to be adjusted to take pressure away from that spot so the issue doesn't return.

I agree in going to your proshop guy and get refitted all together. Sounds like a bevil issue as well as an issue with grabbing. If the ball fits properly the ball holds on to you not the other way around. I know that your span and pitches "feel" like its a great fit but that might be just because your hand is used to having to grab causing that pain and issue with the tendon. I am only speaking as someone who bowled in highschool, college and bowls all around every weekend and practices very hard and does not have this issue. I hope it gets better soon. do something about i now before it becomes an even bigger issue.
Best of luck with that.
