Mike Machuga Reaches Crossroads
« on: April 12, 2010, 12:53:13 AM »
Another story of a bowler reaching a point in is young career, wondering
if he is going to have to quit, because of the limited schedule and low prize funds.
Let's hope that this is not going to be sign of coming attractions.

sad, but true...pretty much 10k sweepers next year, you cant live on that unless you win every week...and even then, it really isnt that much money compared to other sports or just regular everyday jobs.

sad to see, and i hate to say it, but i wish that it does happen, it will hopefully be an eye opener for the PBA and realize that they don't have a clue as to what they are doing with their professional athletes

If he's good enough to be a Golf pro, perhaps he should concentrate on his golf game, go through Q School, get his tour card and compete in golf.  All you have to do is make the cut and you'll earn more than Winning a PBA event.

I enjoy watching him bowl though.

very true But their are a lot of marginal golf pros... But a golf pro at certain clubs make good money better than pba

Mike's got to do what's best, but it would be a sobering moment on the state of the PBA.

That was a very well written article and it is sad to here that Mike will probably not bowl the tour anymore. I don't blame him and it is sad that things are not better for the tour. Unfortunately, bowling as a whole is in the same boat. Something needs to change but which idea that is out there will be part of the solution to turn the page.

You can make more money in the non-televised smaller professional golf tours than in the PBA.

There's a lot of bowlers in Mike's situation.  Unfortunately, the prize money for cashing in a PBA Tour event is not enough to make a living, and the PBA keeps losing sponsors. PBA needs to turn a profit soon if it wants to survive in the very near future.

very true
I dont know how those guys do it
I make more than the tours top earner does every year and Im not exactly living it up
and I dont have the travel expenses and regular day expenses you have to pay out while your on tour
The PBA as an organization is really bad
besides the sense of competition I dont see how any of these guys even have any interest in participating in PBA events
We have local tournaments that are cheaper to enter and pay more than a regional event does
so why would you go bowl in a regional then ?

Take a look at the 2009 PGA money lost..note #205 earned more than $100K..

Golf is just as much a game as bowling is, yet, because of sponsorship, more $$ are being generated for prize pools..

yeah your right they are both more of a game than a sport in the way people think of them
but honestly golf is a hell of a lot harder than bowling is
the huge problem with the PBA is that besides people that really like bowling and are in to it no one else in the world watches it on TV and people regard it as something to maybe do on a friday night 1 time a year and get drunk and have fun

Mike could make a better living as a golf pro at a club, but to stop doing something
you love is hell. I know a lot of the women that bowled in the PWBA.When that folded
it's like a part of them died. Most have went into other fields, but still bowl  leagues, and
nationals.Queens and U.S Open, some bowl The Masters and regionals, and some of the
men's PBA events. But this if a far cry from something of their own that they can make a living at.
