What should bowling center employees know

What bowling center employees should know!!!

Most new employees with jobs in the entertainment industry, are required
to have training and orientation of 40 plus hours before they even start
their first day on the job. Most of this training is not technical training, but
knowledge of how assisting guests, answering questions, how to calm
parents when dealing with lost children.General knowledge of the
theme park,movie theater,movie studio,etc.
But the employees at bowling centers rarely know what is going on.What are some of the things you think bowling center employees should know.

How to keep score and how to operate the 'automatic" scorers
How to help casual bowlers find an appropriate house ball
Where towels, mops, and approach cleaners are located
Learning frequent bowlers' names
Why talcum powder and other powders on shoes soles are bad ideas
What constitutes a foul
Why bowlers should never step across the foul line
How to smile
How to say "thank you"
How to compliment customers
The center's hours of operation
When open play lanes are available
About current or upcoming specials,tournaments,promotions
When the lanes were last oiled;
How to answer the phone properly
How much it costs for open bowling

Just a start, what are some others you can think of.

league bowler(s) should come first as apossed to open play or birthday parties

keep the floor pits and approaches CLEAN from spills candy dust etc etc..

bimbo waitresses should know metal buckets with ice/water = condensation/ wet spots on the floor!!!

just cause it cold outside you dont have to have the f'n heat cranked up to 77!

and just cause its 65 outside doesnt mean you shouldnt run the air conditioning for an hour or so to keep the bowler "cool"

Those open play/parties are what really pay the bills. So don't be surprised if they get priority.

I was a bowling center employee for many years, and while I understand the frustration of how you can be treated by customers, the high road has to be taken quite a bit so you can treat the ones that are worth it with the respect they deserve. I definitely agree that knowledge of the game should be known along with common sense rules on how to run a center as a desk person is first on my list.

know when the lanes were last oiled
know which pattern is on which lanes (sport or house shot)
some slang for lane maintenance (180, dead wood...). this is the biggest concern. i was at a college tournament and go up to the desk and said we have some dead wood on 16 and she looked at me like i was an alien.

As an employee you might have answered the same question
a thousand times, the next person to ask may be asking it
for the first time.Be patient.

That it is not demeaning to clean the toilets,or to be asked
to do it!

That customers are not always right, but the are your customers.

Quickly finding out the answers to customers questions
if you do not know the answer.

As a current employee of a bank full time and a bowling alley part time I would like to say that customer service at a bowling alley is not difficult at all. For the most part,  bowlers are more laid back and understand that the employees at the alley are people not machines as opposed to a bank. If you are nice to them they give you the same respect in return.

I would like to say that if you guys are having any issues with the alley attendants then there is a good chance that the management isn't what it should be. The owner of the alley I work at shows up maybe 5 times a year. Employees are hired because its a body not because they are qualified. It would be very easy for me to be the biggest piece of crap to the customers since there is really no one paying attention overhead. Maybe the alley I work at is more exception than rule, but the owner/manager should be making sure employees know what they are doing and know their place.

That there is always something in the bowling center that needs cleaning.
Not to drink alcoholic beverages before work.
How to put phone callers on" hold" without forgetting about them.
What the heck a bowling handicap is,and why most leagues have them.
Not to wait for bowlers to ask them for help, ask if you may help them.
Why it's better for bowlers to voice their opinions, than to have dissatisfied bowlers
who remain silent and leave, and take their business to another center.

When retrieving dead wood don't start walking across the approaches 6 lanes from where the deadwood is? It happened and the girl almost got killed by someone in their approach.

Knowing common bowling alley terminology would be helpful.

The guy oiling the lanes should know what pattern the machine is putting out. And some basic knowledge of how the machine worked.

After walking with the machine down the lane I knew more about what it was doing and how it worked than the guy that had worked it for 2 years.
