Throwing 14
« on: September 24, 2009, 01:05:53 PM »
I am throwing 14 lb stuff now. I had a hand injury and I went down to it. But my average has dropped since. Does it make a lot of difference with pin action throwing a lighter ball?

A 14lbs ball will carry just fine you may be throwing the ball to fast or maybe releasing different with your hand injury. What sort of problems are you having?

I've gone back and forth between 15's and 14's a few times (currently at 14lbs), and haven't noticed any drop in average, but pin carry was a bit different.

The 14's carry the flush hits just as good, but don't quite kick the off hits as much. The good thing was that I didn't have as many off hits because the 14's allowed me to be more accurate.

Drrev hit it on the head!  I did the same and I hovered around 195 for almost two years and now everything feels really loose and comfortable.  At times in the beginning it felt weird but i knew i would suffer a bit and managed to fight through it.  I had some breakout sets, and some not so good.  This new season everthing feels great, loose, fluid, and absolutely normal.  it was hard dropping from 16lb to 14, but if you have your mind in the right place it will be easy.  the toughest for me was finding the balls that would match with the new speed and revs.

Like Drrev said, things may change, like your pap.  mine did and i had to either re-drill stuff, or buy new.  My Pap has gone back to what it was before, and now it feels as if I have more control over the ball and the ability to manipulate it more than i ever have.  of course i have been seeing a coach for 3 months, i.e....Tom Blasco.  The guy is awesome and has made me believe that there's a whole lot more ahead instead of leveling out.

Boos, i havent loss any carry whatsoever.  as long as you have good angle to the pocket, you shouldnt lose any carry.

Tahnks for the reply. I injured it when I bent it back in a pool. It was not sprained or broken. Had a x-ray of it done. Nothing wrong. But I am a big guy. So I think I should be throwing heavier equipment.

15 to 14 in August. Practiced with my new 8 ball 14 arsenal for two weeks, and went straight into league. As long as you dont get to fast, and watch your timing, there should be no carry or average loss. I will get comments from my teamates saying they do not see anything different, but my realease and ball speed is a tad better. I am up in average by 5 pins in two of my three leagues, and the same in the other.
New 14# Arsenal
Bounty Hunter, Full Swing, Clutch, Bedlam, Widow Venom, Sideways, Neptune,
Global 900 Bam spare, and two still waiting to drill (AMF Hype Urethane, and
Pearl).

I Thank you for the post. Another thing I forgot to say is that I am a big guy throwing 14 lb balls. A lot of people do not think I should be.

Im a big guy also and went to 14 due to shoulder tear and people were saying the same thing.

Look only you know if it is uncomfortable to throw the heavier stuff

I have a team mate that uses my stuff sometimes and he doesnt even notice the difference in weight since I went from a light 15 to a medium 14

+1 on the different delivery due to the injury is the probable cause as for carry

By a BIG guy, what do you mean?

I am 5'10"-295. A friend of mine is 6'2"-175 and we both throw 14lb stuff.
