Help picking a ball for a newer bowler
« on: November 06, 2006, 09:19:45 AM »
Hello im an occasional bowler and i plan to pick up a league again here in the winter. I've bowled in a couple real casual leagues before anyways I need help picking a new ball. Mine had been plugged and redrilled and a plug broke causing a large chip out of the surface of the ball so I feel I need to upgrade anyways.

Anyways I am a fingertip bowler currently I enjoy it, my wrists are bad so I havn't wanted to change my style anymore. I need a nice ball, cost isn't really a big issue. The lanes I bowl on are not any means great, probably slight to medium oil. surface is unknown all though it actually does look and feel like wood. anyways any help for me? thank you!

Check with the proshop where you plan to bowl league.  A good proshop can watch you bowl and fit you up with a ball and drilling that fits your game and their oil pattern.

I guess my question is such balls like an absolute inferno, would they work with a fingertip bowler or would the hook be way to soon?

You don't bowl much and your a newer bowler yet want a hook machine?? Try something like the storm tropicals and get the basics down befroe you buy a 200+ buck ball.

Look for a Vibe (either one) or a Tropical, a Scout or a Jinx, or a Power Groove. Believe me, most of those balls are very very underrated and bang for the buck are the way to go.

Would be easier to suggest a ball if you stated some of your stats. Where you stand, mark you shoot for, speed, cranker, stroker or tweener. But Kegler has a good point of going to the pro-shop and asking them. By watching youbowl they can suggest a ball that would work well for how you bowl.

Inferno is a great ball, but if you are a casual bowler, do you want to spend that amount of money on a ball that you are going to use for roughly 30 weeks and then put it away for the summer.

I would look at a SCOUT REACTIVE. About $100.00 and it is a decent ball. My wife and kids threw one for years. But IMHO for a "NEW" bowler, that is where I would go. IF youw ant to step up after the end fo the season, it would be really easy to sell it or give it away to someone that needs a ball.

But if you feel that you need and Inferno, the by all means go ahwad and pick one up.

BOWLING IS FUN NO MATTER WHAT YOU SCORE. BUT A 300 IS ALWAYS NICE.

STRIKE ZONE & PYRO. STAND 18 AND THROW 10 OUT TO 5 AND SMASH THE POCKET. AT LEAST THAT IS THE PLAN OF THE NIGHT...

GOOD LUCK AND GOOD BOWLING!!!

AMF Orbit Extreme, or Roto-Grip Mercury/Saturn/Venus

Those four balls are by far the best "entry" level balls out there -- more bang for your buck than anything else.

i would go and get something like a tropical and use the other money to get some coaching to help solve your wrist issues..
if you're throwing 15 or 16 lbs, try dropping it a pound..it'll make a difference in your wrist.

i hope this helps..

Thank you guys very much. I try to avoid pro shops because experience with other sports has taught me often they try to sell you what is more then needed for entry lvl.

you need to find a good pro shop then.  When I've been in mine and a new bowler comes in, they clearly explain the difference between the plastic, entry-level resin, midprice and high end stuff.  And the only time i've seen them sell mid or above is when the customer REALLY wants it.
