Red, White and Blue oil patterns !!!
« on: April 20, 2010, 01:33:49 AM »
Okay guys a little insight about myself.  I took a 10 year layoff from bowling and this year is the first league, I've joined since 1999.  I'm currently carrying a 200 plus average.  My style form is close to a tweener, but I'm a power player with a crankers hand and I'm averaging around 16-17 mph ball speed.  I recently acquired new bowling balls and it was suggested that I should throw a 15 pound ball. I'm use to throwing a 16 pound ball.  It was said  to me that there are no pro's throwing a 16 pound bowling ball and throwing a 16 pounder is to show that you are macho.  So I took the advice and I recently purchase the new mission, invasion and pure swing.

For the second week in a row on league, My house has been laying down this new blue type of oil pattern and last week was the first time, we bowled on it. Last week, they put down the oil pattern blue I and this week was blue II. Yesterday, I was killing the pocket with my invasion and I was hanging 10 pins like it wasn't funny, then I change balls to my pure swing and I continue to leave 10 pins.  I swear, I've never left so many 10 pins in my life in a series of bowling ever.

Another thing, there is a guy on my league who is a former PBA bowler. He slightly has a higher average than me and he was struggling just as I was.  I have the second highest average on my league and as of right now, It's been going down hill with this new type of oil pattern. HELP!!!

This is the second week of me struggling and I figure, I'll vent my frustration on here and see if any of ya'll guys on here have any suggestions.  What is the Red, White and Blue oil pattern and what are these type numbers to go with it?

I understand the Blue pattern is pretty close to a sport pattern with a 3:1 ratio of oil from board to board. That is it gives you much less pull and swing area than a house pattern. You usually need to play a tighter line and use a ball with less backend as a way to control the oil and the pattern.

That said, if you used both a dull, solid oiler and a medium oil, polished pearl and still left 10 pins, I'd suggest 2 possibilities:
1. They never cleaned/stripped the backends, or
2. You're still swinging the lane too much and expecting a house forgiveness area that is not, theoretically, supposed to be there with a Blue oil pattern.

Kudos to your accuracy and your delivery that you were still hitting the pocket so much on what is a farily difficult pattern. I'd suggest using more of a control ball or a benchmark ball, that is, one that is smoother with less backend that a ball like the Pure Swing.

Since both you and a former PBA player are both having the same problem, maybe reason #1 is closer to the truth. I'd still recommend a control ball or some sort for next week. At least try one.

There may be other possibilites that I am not thinking of right now.

I think White is 5:1 ratio and Red is closest to a house blended pattern. I think it's about 10:1 ratio.

Thanks man for the advice, I'll definitely play with a ball that doesn't have a strong move on the backend and play a tighter line.  I was starting to believe I was hitting the pocket too hard.  I saw people who would float their shots into the pocket and they were carrying, and I was destroying the pocket leaving pesty ten pins. I made adjustments to my entry angle to come into the pocket late to carry the 10 pin but then I would leave the 7 pin, which happened twice.  Then I would hit the pocket harder and here we go again, the freaking 10, and one time I left the 8 pin.  I also made an adjustments to hit the pocket hard but late and send the head pin off the wall, so I can send the messenger off the wall into the ten pin and that worked a few or more times but not consistently. I can honestly say it was a wild and crazy ride seeing that type of pin action for two weeks straight. Grrrrr, it's still haunting me..lol

Let me ask you this question, is there a such thing as hitting the pocket to hard with my ball speed being around 16-17 mph having a high rev rate, that when the ball hits the break point, it's flying into to the pocket with authority? I've been hearing mixing reviews on this subject and I just want to know if there is a definite answer.
