Mixing of USBC Approved Cleaners - OK for competition?
« on: February 25, 2010, 08:52:05 AM »
Is allowable (at USBC tournaments) to mix more than 1 USBC approved product (i.e. simple green and alcohol) to create a custom cleaner? There isn't clear guidance on the USBC site under the equipment specs.

Simple Green is a USBC approved commercial cleaner, as is Isopropyl Alcohol. In theory, it should be OK to mix these and then use the mixture on the ball as long as there is no chemical reaction between the products, right?

Here's the link to the USBC equip. specs for reference:

You need to be careful what you mix.  I saw someone mix zappit and clean and dull.  What an ugly mess.  They had a rash that rivaled poison ivy.

Indeed! If you don''t know what''s in them, don''t mix them.
Simple Green and Isopropyl should be fine.

Simple Green and alcohol is a pretty standard poor-man's cleaner.  Throw a rock and you'll find someone with a bottle of that mix in their bag.

Mixing ball-specific cleaners, I don't know.  I'm not sure I would mix something like Clean 'n' Dull with the Lanemasters cleaner or Remedy.  You just don't know what's going to happen with it.

Simple Green and alcohol are a tried-and-true mix, though.

the usbc''s rules regarding permitted cleaners is archaic at best. no advantage to the bowler is had by using an uncertified cleaner.

I'm not worried about the chemical reaction, as I am only looking to use simple green and alcohol or orange degreaser and alcohol (which I know are fairly stable with each other).

What I really want to know is if I can be disqualified for using such a cleaner. My thought is that the individual components are OK, so the sum of these components must also be OK. Is this a valid assumption?!

look the rules are pretty stupid...

i remember from a movie maybe called dirty deeds, the guy had to drink beer in front of cups, what he does? pour the beer into a coffe cup and done

if someone puts an not certified cleaner or alcohol into a cleaner, when he sprays and cleans a ball, i dont think u can really tell by the result, but anyway this argument could go on and on

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

There have been proshops that basically Simple Green and Alcohol and sold it. It is really hard to police ball cleaners on the lanes other than if they are clear or a solid consistency. Did have a guys ball kicked out for using denatured at our city one year, I was a director. Worked out for him, rolled 300 his first game. If I were to guess and it could be proven what was in the bottle, you might could get ejected from the tournament or the ball pulled. If it is in a bottle marked USBC approved and is clear no one would probably even question it. Not that anyone has ever done that, right..
