Modern game: Who has it hurt?
« on: October 21, 2005, 11:56:54 PM »
Has the modern game:
Hook in box
THS
high revs/high speed

Who has it hurt?  I grew up in a litte hick town in the panhandle of oklahoma.  We had one 16 lane center, that still has self scoring.  It is like walking back in time.

I watched a few guys average 2-O for lots of years, then came the modern game with resin and THS.  I will use my grandfather as an example, I remember he was always 195-205, now he can barely get to 170.  He has difficult controlling resin balls and lacks hitting power with urethane.  I know age plays a factor, he is almost 70 now(still a pup right Bones?), but sometimes the we lose site of the bowlers the modern game has hurt...

I think the modern game has hurt the slower speed, medium to medium/high revs bowler with current resin/particle equipment. If one is unable to match up speed with revs in today's conditions, the scoring suffers...

My bowling "has gone south big time" the last two years and I'm not talking about a few pins a game, I am talking about 20-30 pins a game. In the 2 houses I bowl in, I used to be able to stand in the area of the middle dot give or take 2 boards either way of it and throw over the 2nd arrow at various angles depending on what the condition called for.

The lane conditions have been much different the last two years and is is imperitive for me to move left and throw right of which I have not been able to master. Thus my average has suffered badly. (even throwing an ocassional gutter ball trying to play deep....lol) So bad in fact that I have been considering giving up bowling and spend my money on something that I might enjoy more than I have been enjoying it the last two years of bowling.

I agree with Bring Your A Game about free armswing being imperative to scoring well on the modern lane conditions. Since working with a coach on emphasizing more of a free armswing (which I believe goes hand in hand with good timing) my average and accuracy to my target line have shot upward...

here's a radical thought----perhaps, just perhaps, the "modern game" has hurt bowlers who can't( or refuse to )adapt. i realize age and/or physical limitations have limited some players abilities. but, if you are an "average healthy adult bowler" you should be able to compensate one way or another. if i can learn to open up the lane anyone can........

I'm not going to say all bowlers (including seniors) are like this, but most do no ball maintanance.  If you have slow ball speed then its IMPERATIVE to have the pro shop keep a fresh layer of polish on your ball.  Rolling hooking balls create friction and the balls of today more so.  If you are a bowler that depends on length to keep your ball in the pocket then you need to make sure you have your ball in tip top condition every week.  It maybe that you need a professional polish job every three weeks.  It all depends on how many games you bowl a week and how much in the dry you play (refusing to play the wet and/or move inside).

We made a great friend at our lanes.  He's 84, used to be PBA in the really really old days.  He's almost 200 average today.  His ball speed is slow, his backswing low, ball weight lower, balance not like it used to be.  He had lasik so his sight is good.  That's what happens.  Come on, you cannot expect nothing physical to change after 50 to 60 years.

Everything changes.  We could go back to rubber balls and hand sprayed lanes, but I'm sure you'd not like it.  Maybe some overground ball returns so you cannot move left on the right lane or so that your trail leg hits it everytime?

Pay the money and get some good lessons.  You cannot keep moving
your feet left and keep your target way out right.  (right hander).

You need to move your feet and your target at the proper ratios to keep striking.

Plus you may now be in a slump built through mental and physical bad habits. So it becomes even more important to get some lessons so that you can ground your game again and start building instead of tearing down.

Give up the 10 board!!!! Life does not revolve around the 10 board.
