More AMF/Bowlmor fun
« on: February 12, 2014, 07:59:47 PM »
Got a flyer at league last night saying that the center was "excited" to announce their "Lights are Out" promotion.  The flyer went on to say that during league, nothing would change.  However, during open play, the center will use their "Extreme Bowling Lighting".  It may affect league make-up or pre-bowls during those times.  Heard about one team that had to do a make up during one of those times, they were not pleased   :D

I think, Big deal.

I do not work for Bowlmor and don't love extreme bowling but I have found it gives me a different look at the lanes and has allowed me to see new lines and maybe improve my bowling by seeing the green laser lines all down the lanes.

The other thought is Bowlmor is trying to take these money losers and make them profitable so many of us have a place to bowl.  I like it when my bowling alley stays open!

They tried it in one of the larger centers in Southern California where I practiced on Saturdays. The place was 2/3 full most of the afternoon. They went to extreme and no one showed up. People would walk in and see the lights off and walk back out. Lasted about 3 weeks and now back to normal.

I just moved to No. VA and most of the houses are Bowl America but there is one Bowlmor/AMF in the area so when we were looking for leagues to join we went to all of the houses close by. The BA house had printed sheets of all their leagues and even what leagues were looking for people. The AMF house had no info on their leagues. The asst manager went off memory as to what leagues they had on what nights. And they don't open until 4:30 and unless there is a league bowling the lights are off. The lights are off all weekend and the games are $7/game. Place was empty when I was there.

Bowlmor is obviously targeting a demographic that is not a part of the bowling world that most of us occupy.

Bowling has changed forever. It will never be what it once was, and it is up to the people in charge what bowling turns into.

Bowlmor seems to want it turned into a purely recreational activity. Perhaps they are right, and that is all that will be left of it eventually. Only time will tell.

I will say this:

I work at a bowling center that is not Bowlmor affiliated.  All day, every day, open bowlers come in or call so they can ask what time "midnight bowling" starts (which we do Friday nights).  Many are angry, disappointed, or simply unwilling to spend their money if the lights aren't going out.  There is a very significant demand for that kind of environment from open play bowlers.  Even if it didn't pan out, doing cosmic bowl during open play was a sensible idea to try.

This is a sobering thought and possible harsh reality.

A guy I bowl with is a manager at a Brunswick, he says people stand and wait up to an hour for cosmic to start, mind you, there are dozens of up lanes available at the time, but they'd rather wait.
