Ok I have seen everything... I think

Man brought in a ball last night.  He wanted a slug put in.  That was no problem.  He had two balls and I took the measurements for him and one of the balls had a milky white plug job.  I touched the plug and it gave.  Someone had plugged the ball with silicone.  Anyone have any ideas why???

Sounds like something he might've done at home himself. If not, surely he would've complained to any shop that would do that, wouldn't he?

  I once plugged a small x-hole with some J-B WELD. It was a LOOOOONG time ago (Grey ANGLE), and the color matched, so it wasn't bad. But SILICONE?

He had another Storm ball that had been plugged about 3 times and all the plugs were cracking out.  I see a lot of this kind of thing in this area.  Really really scary because I think people except this because they don't know any better.  I know that almost every ball that comes into my shop has exactly the same drill specs except span.  The key word in Pro Shop is the word PRO.  There has always been some sort of experimentation in bowling.  That leads to innovations but where do you draw the line.  Next thing you know we will see cracked balls held together with duct tape and mailing twine going down the lane.

SMASH,

  I agree completely. Pro shop, while not inferring a professional bowler, SHOULD infer a professional salesman who is experienced in his field and portrays exemplary skill, aptitude, and attitude in the field of selling, drilling, and repairing bowling equipment.

  Back when I worked in a shop ( YEARS ago now ), we stood behind our work and the quality thereof.  If we worked on a ball, it was right or we would make it right.  And, if the plugs cracked out, regardless of timeframe, we would re-plug AT NO COST to the customer.

  Too many people just out there trying to make as fast a buck as possible, turning out crap with little or no pride in their workmanship.

Maybe they got confused, and instead of making a thumb mold from silicone they wanted to make a thumb slug? That one would be tough to drill out!

Actually I have no idea, but it sounds expensive to me. The silicone we use is kinda' pricey...

Not to mention that plugging a ball with silicone makes the ball illegal because there's no way mushy silicone would hold up legally to a durometer test.
