$10,000 first place....Thoughts/Advice???
« on: June 16, 2010, 01:58:28 AM »
I am building a league in Metro Detroit on Monday nights in the center where my shop is. I have worked out the lineage with the owners and will be able to guarantee $10,000 for first place if I fill the house. Here are some particulars and I would appreciate everyone''s input.

Top 3 spots $10,000---$5000---$3500

4 man rosters (easier to build roster, quicker night of bowling,)
(bigger share of winnings, done in time for MNF)
$25.00 a week ( I currently pay $22, $21+mandatory pots, and $25 in my leagues)
35 weeks      (week after Labor Day until 2 weeks before Memorial Day)

Those are pretty set in stone in order for me to guarantee $10,000. Only variance will be to move to 5 man rosters possibly if we have a huge turnout and that''s a maybe.

Looking for other thoughts...I have a framework of by-laws copied from another league and I will be refining them this week.

Lmk what you guys think.

First thought is, I hope you win the league that is alot of money.

Sounds pretty good, make sure you have a lane courtesy rule, some people around here, in the bigger leagues freak out if they dont get their two lanes.

Never mind, I see you are in Saginaw area. Not a terrible drive but with Mi. winters it could be a bit much. Lmk if you are interested.

I also forgot to mention that we will have full control of the pattern. I am thinking of doing one of the Kegel Challenge series patterns but I have to get with the mechanic to find out what he can run. His machine won''t drop reverse oil.

How likely is filling the house?  How much is lineage / prize fund?

I am pretty optimistic that we can fill the house (18 lanes).

Lineage is $10.00

That leaves $15 a week for prize fund/expenses. 15x4bowlers(60)x18teams(1080)x35weeks = $37,800 total fund.

I have an approximate payout per team:
Top 3 looks like:

$10,000
$5000
$3500

So even 3rd place would bring almost $900 a man.

What I am most curious about is the format and point system. Used to bowl in a league with 40 points a night and loved it. 7 point system is most popular so everyone understands it. Not sure how I/we wan't to set that up.

With the format I have 3 ideas and would like input.

1)Single season with last last 3 weeks being a NCAA style bracket between the top 8 teams for the $10,000.

2)Split season with the 2 half winners bowling for 1st/2nd place money and teams 3-18 would place according to total points.

3)Single season total points payout for everyone with backloaded position rounds.

Each of these can be altered or fine tuned. I am wide open for the most part to ideas. I want to make it as enjoyable as possible for everyone and right now it looks like we are gonna have a wide array of bowlers/talent levels. (180-230)

We actually did thirds in a league that I bowl in, winners of each third, plus a wild card team - highest point total without winning a third bowled a three game set across 2 pairs of lanes.  They would flip flop the lanes after each game, ending with the third game back on the original pair of lanes.

We also did a point system, 1 point for each person's game that they won, plus 2 points for a team win, 1 point for total series that was won individually plus 3 points for the team that won total series.

We did this in our big money scratch league in CA, and I think it works well, keeping everyone excited till the end of the year:

We had 32-36 teams usually, had 3 divisions by random draw. Divided the year into thirds. Begining of each third we randomly redraw for divisions.

At the end of the year, the 3 division winners from each 3rd were seeded into the playoffs 1-9 (or less if one team won more then one divsion title). We then added in 2 Wild Card teams based on most points without winning a division. Then on the Saturday before the last night of league, every team not in the playoffs came in and rolled a "Last Chance tournament". It was 3 games total pins. We took the top 6 teams out of that and they then rolled two game matches using the league point system (we gave a point for total which was disegarded in this format) until we were down to the final teams (nubmer depends on how many spots were available because of multiple division winners) until we had a total of 12 teams in the playoffs. Now in order to put some weight to the regular season, in our format, the #1 overall seed (a division winner with the most overall points) was automatically seeded into the final match and the rest bowled basically a step ladder type format (on the Sunday after the Last Chance tourney) until there was one team left to challenge the #1 seed. The championship match then took place during the last night of league, while everyone else rolled a sweeper night.

I would tweak this not not seed the #1 overall team into the finals, but do a bracket type format where #1 bowls #12, #2 bowls #11 and so on. Then in round 2, the highest seed rolls the lowest seed left and down, so #1 would roll #6, #2 would roll #5, etc. Then in round 3 the highest seed left gets a bye, the other 2 teams roll and the winner rolls the team that sat out that round. This way you still put value on the regualr season ( bowling the "weaker" teams in the bracket, the chance for a bye in round 3) but the #1 seed isn't locked into no worse then second like in our league.

For points I always like the Peterson type system - 1 or 2 pts for beating your man, then a number of points for team game. We do an 8 pt/game system in our scratch league 1 pt for beating your man, 4 pts for team game, nothing for totals. But if you want to do the playoff format you must have an odd number of points, so that you can avoid ties in the 2 game rolloffs (as much as possible) so you can add a pt for team totals as well.

we always did our big money league in 4 rounds, plus the sweeper night was team sweeper, counted the same amount of money as a full round.
So - for example - with your prize fund, winner of each round would receive $2000.

The issues I see with ONLY one round is that the teams closer to the bottom, who didn't have a chance for big money, would just stop showing up. Then you'd be short your GUARANTEED prize fund.

Yeah the 40 point system has been my favorite ever since the first league I bowled in that used it. However with a 4 man roster it will end up being a different number if that is the way we go since 40 points is for a 5 man roster and we are doing 4.

I am sure we will figure it out.

I do believe that number will be 32 as a bowler can earn 8 pt.s a night.  I love that system but I am out of town too much on Mondays to join that league.
Good luck, complete.

Yeah, 32 would work. Many numbers work. I would like to keep a round number though and will have to put some thought into how I decide to set it up.

Thanks for the well wishes though CRD. Come stop in the shop when you're not busy.
