Thumb down on non bowling arm.
« on: November 08, 2014, 08:25:18 AM »
I've been working a lot with trying to keep the thumb down on my left hand to minimize shoulder rotation. I find that when I execute properly, the swing feels effortless, from the shoulder, I don't pick my head up, and the ball reads the lane like a dream (not the ball lol).

My issue is trying to get the hand to rotate from thumb up while holding the ball in the stance to thumb down. Almost like my non bowling hand doesn't know when to do it. I know it should probably be down by the time the ball passes the leg on the downswing, but I either do it immediately (which makes my shoulders not move at all) or too late (which negates the movement.)

Should I just do a foul line drill with the non bowling arm in position and then feel it that way, or does someone else have any suggestions. I feel like this step will be the next breakthrough in my game.

Here is a youtube video of some pros using the thumb down:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5nnDbV0znE

Its a video of the Modern 10-Pin Bowling Swing and Release by Dean Champ

Thumb Down is 4:27 into the video

Quote
The balance arm forward with the thumb down creates shoulder rotation, and keeping the shoulder forward into the release helps transfer energy more efficiently to the ball.

Pay attention to the hand position of the balance arm with these bowlers

A good video, perhaps the best in demonstrating the power release of today.

Thanks for posting it.

I had an up and down head movement in my approach for years and tried a couple of different things to minimize it. After taking vdieos of myself, I noticed that my balance arm was very busy for a simple 5 step approach, especially the few feet to the foul line.

Anyway, after applying this method, I was able to fix the up/down movement and be more solid and down at the line. Also, I was able to focus or stare down the spot I was looking at much better/longer. I went from off roading to street pretty much...

You could stare down or focus on it, but could you hit it?

Yes Sir I can, like hitting a golf ball between two tees......With the spot, I make it 5 boards wide. It's a THS shot, anyone can hit an area of 5 boards. But do I carry a lot? That's a no.... ;)

BTW, I like to do some side action with hitting a quarter down 40 on lanes 32..first to 10 wins.... i love it, seriously :D

that's why for the quarter drills or black tape...i say 3 to "5" boards so mentally I don't think I'm walking in a tight rope so to speak....

If you're lined up you should have a board on either side of your target

Yes, that is it...my +/- 1...when asked what board I'm hitting, I don't say I hit "a board" lol ("boards don't hit back")...I try to get the ball to the spot..which can be 789 for example..

My whole game needs more than a band aid. It needs a body cast and a medically induced coma.

That's funny!
